It was a technical milestone, not a promise that every AAA game would work or run well. The announcement covered M1 and M2 systems; it does not establish AAA gaming support on M3 Macs.
What the October 2024 announcement established
Asahi Linux assembled a compatibility stack that could run selected x86 Windows games on Arm-based Apple Silicon with Vulkan graphics. Fedora described the feature as preliminary availability in Fedora Asahi Remix 40. Asahi called the toolkit an alpha, so game compatibility and performance were still works in progress.
The announcement named working examples, but it was not a complete game-compatibility list or an independent benchmark study. A game running in the alpha does not establish that another game will work: results depend on its Windows and graphics requirements, the Apple Silicon model and available memory, and the maturity of the relevant compatibility layers.
How Asahi Linux ran Windows games
A typical Windows game expects x86 instructions and Windows system interfaces, and may use DirectX for graphics. Asahi’s stack had to bridge those expectations to an Arm Linux system rendering through Vulkan. It combined several tools, each handling a different part of that translation.

Why the alpha used a small virtual machine
The project identified a memory-page-size mismatch: x86 applications expect 4K pages, while Apple systems use 16K pages. Asahi’s workaround was to run the games in a small virtual machine using muvm. The host could retain its 16K page size while the guest presented 4K pages to the game; the VM also passed through the GPU and game-controller devices.
How it handled missing graphics features
The M1 GPU did not provide every graphics feature at the hardware level required by the APIs. The announcement said tessellation and geometry shaders were handled with compute shaders. Geometry-shader emulation was not fast, but Asahi said it was sufficient for examples such as Ghostrunner. That workaround is evidence of functionality, not a general performance guarantee.

Games named in the alpha announcement
These are examples Asahi listed in October 2024, not results from independent testing or a current compatibility matrix.

At the time, Asahi said sparse texturing was a next step for Honeykrisp that would unlock more DirectX 12 games. It also cautioned that newer AAA titles did not reach 60 frames per second in the alpha. That dated statement is not a benchmark for every game or a claim about later software versions. The project summed up its priority as: “Correctness comes first. Performance improves next.”

Hardware and memory: the announcement’s limits
M1 and M2
The October 2024 announcement addressed M1- and M2-series systems and said the toolkit worked across those systems. Asahi’s release-era guidance was that most games required 16GB of memory because of emulation overhead. Treat that as the project’s guidance at the time, not a universal minimum established by hardware testing for every game.
M3
Do not carry the 2024 gaming claim over to M3. In its February 2026 Linux 6.19 progress report, Asahi described M3 support as preliminary: several components, including keyboard, touchpad, Wi-Fi, NVMe and USB 3, were working with local patches, but graphics were software-rendered and very slow while GPU reverse engineering continued. The report also said display support and hardware integration still needed work before a shippable general release. It does not establish an M3 gaming release, or what may have changed after that report.

Can you install it and play Steam games?
The October 2024 Fedora Magazine article described the feature as preliminary on Fedora Asahi Remix 40 and as a preview of broader FEX integration in Fedora Linux 42. Its release-era setup path was to install Fedora Asahi Remix, update with dnf upgrade --refresh && reboot, then install Steam with dnf install steam. Those are historical instructions, not verified current installation guidance: package availability, commands and game compatibility can change, so check current Fedora Asahi Remix documentation before following them.
A USB game controller is an optional peripheral to consider because the announcement says muvm passes controllers through. Asahi did not identify or test a particular controller, so that statement is not a compatibility guarantee for every model.
How to judge whether a particular game is a good fit
There is no supported blanket answer for “AAA games” or all Steam titles. For a specific game, check the current compatibility information and weigh these factors rather than inferring support from one successful example:
- Exact title: A working game does not prove another game works, even if they use the same store or engine.
- Graphics API and features: DirectX 12 support can depend on specific features; the alpha announcement identified sparse texturing as a limitation for some titles.
- Mac generation and memory: The 2024 gaming announcement concerned M1 and M2, and its 16GB guidance reflected emulation overhead.
- Correctness and speed: A title launching is not the same as rendering correctly or playing smoothly. Asahi’s alpha notes distinguished examples that ran well from newer AAA games that did not reach 60 fps.
- Setup and translation overhead: Running the game involves instruction emulation, Windows compatibility, graphics translation and, in the announced design, a VM. These layers are part of why results vary.
The project’s official home describes Asahi Linux’s goal as a polished Linux experience on Apple Silicon and points readers to Fedora Asahi Remix and documentation. For current installation and hardware status, rely on those project resources rather than treating an October 2024 alpha announcement as a present-day support list.
