What is Armory?
Armory is a Bitcoin wallet client. Bitcoin.org describes it as “an advanced Bitcoin client that expands its features for Bitcoin power users.” Its documented features include offline-wallet signing, multisignature transactions, multiple wallets, key importing and sweeping, message signing, printable one-time backups, and GPU-resistant wallet encryption. These are features listed in the project FAQ, not a guarantee that every feature or workflow is supported by every current installation.
How Armory’s documented cold-storage workflow works
Armory’s cold-storage design separates the computer holding private-key data from the computer that connects to the internet. The project says users can create a wallet on a computer that never goes online, then use an online computer to manage the wallet. Its offline-wallet tutorial describes moving files between the two machines; the offline computer does not need to synchronize the blockchain.
- Create and protect the offline wallet: Use a computer that remains disconnected from the internet to create the wallet and keep its private-key data there.
- Use a separate online computer: Prepare or manage transactions from the online machine without moving the private keys onto it.
- Transfer the relevant files between computers: The tutorial describes file transfers as part of the workflow. A USB flash drive can be used for this purpose, but Armory does not prescribe or endorse a particular drive.
- Sign offline: Use the offline computer for signing, then transfer the resulting file as required by the workflow.
This is the design described in Armory’s documentation, not a guarantee that a particular setup is secure. You remain responsible for keeping backups safe and transferring the correct files without exposing key data. The available tutorial is older, so treat it as a description of the workflow rather than verified instructions for the current interface.

Requirements and supported desktop platforms
Bitcoin.org lists Windows, Mac, and Linux for desktop Armory and says full-node software is required. That dependency matters: Armory is not presented in that listing as a lightweight wallet that can be used without operating the required node software.
The Armory download page lists version 0.96.0 packages for Windows and Ubuntu/Debian, and says that this release is compatible with Bitcoin Core 0.14.0 and later and SegWit. That statement applies to the listed release; it does not establish compatibility with every current operating system or Bitcoin Core version. Check the project’s current channels before downloading, particularly if you use a newer system or node.

How current is Armory?
The project homepage lists Armory 0.96.0 and directs readers to other channels for the latest news and releases. The download page also presents older releases and operating-system package details, while its offline tutorial is historical. The available pages therefore do not establish whether 0.96.0 is the latest maintained desktop release today. Verify the current download, compatibility, and support status through the project before relying on the software for funds.
Is the Armory iPhone wallet the same product?
A separate Armory-branded iPhone wallet page describes a self-custody wallet and says it is “Coming soon on the App Store.” It describes local signing, multisig vaults, and watch-only use, but the available information does not establish that this offering belongs to the legacy desktop Armory project. Do not treat it as an available iPhone version of desktop Armory.

Who should consider Armory?
Armory may suit technically confident Bitcoin users who specifically want an offline-key workflow or multisignature controls and can operate the required full-node software. Before choosing it, consider whether you can maintain an offline computer, follow a file-transfer and backup routine, and confirm that the current release supports your system. If those requirements are not practical, the documented design may not fit your needs.
