For a Windows PC buyer, the practical differences are how a particular computer performs on your workloads and whether its software, drivers, and peripherals are supported. Windows 11 on Arm can run many x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but driver-dependent hardware and some games need separate checks.
What are Arm and x86?
Arm and x86 are instruction-set architectures (ISAs): they define the instructions a processor exposes and the software-facing rules for executing them. Arm describes its architecture as RISC; x86 and x64 are a different architecture family commonly used in Windows PCs. Those labels alone do not tell you which processor or computer will be faster.
It helps to distinguish an architecture from a microarchitecture. The ISA is the instruction vocabulary and contract software expects. The microarchitecture is the particular processor design that implements it, including choices such as pipeline and cache. Arm says multiple companies build their own implementations of its architecture with different power, performance, and area targets. Arm’s architecture overview explains the distinction.
Arm’s CPU architecture page reports more than 350 billion chips shipped cumulatively; the page does not state the figure’s year. Arm’s CPU architecture page provides that figure.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Will my existing software run on an Arm processor?
Compatibility depends on the operating system, the available translation or emulation support, the software build, and any required hardware drivers. Windows on Arm’s documented ability to emulate x86 and x64 apps is not a guarantee that the same software will work on every Arm device or operating system.
Windows 11 on Arm apps
Windows 11 on Arm runs native Arm apps and many unmodified x86 and x64 apps through emulation. Microsoft says native Arm apps provide the best performance and battery life. Its Windows on Arm documentation describes native apps, emulation, and Arm64EC, which lets developers migrate code incrementally while retaining some x64 code and libraries.

Microsoft says most Windows apps can be installed and run on Windows 11 Arm. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism to improve the performance of emulated apps; this is a version-specific feature, not a guarantee that every app will work or perform like a native build. App support changes, so check Microsoft’s current Apps on Arm compatibility resource and confirm support with the software vendor.
Drivers, peripherals, and games
Emulating an application does not provide a missing hardware driver. Windows on Arm needs drivers built into Windows or designed for Arm64. Check with the device manufacturer for drivers for any essential printer, dock, security product, or specialist peripheral before buying.

Microsoft says Windows 11 Arm supports most printers, including those using Mopria, but recommends checking with the manufacturer when a peripheral requires a driver. Some games that depend on anti-cheat drivers not designed for Arm PCs may not work. Verify each important game’s support with its publisher; app compatibility alone does not establish that the game’s drivers will work. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm FAQ for its compatibility guidance.
Does Arm or x86 deliver better performance?
There is no architecture-wide winner. Processors implementing the same architecture can use different designs and target different power, performance, and area trade-offs. A meaningful comparison names the exact processor and computer and measures the work you care about; architecture alone cannot establish which system is faster or more efficient.

When comparing two computers, look for results that identify:
- The actual systems: processor model, computer configuration, operating system, and memory.
- The workload and conditions: task or benchmark version, power mode, test duration, and whether the software ran natively or through emulation.
- The kind of performance: single-core or multi-core results, short bursts or sustained work. Laptop cooling and power limits can affect sustained performance.
- The rest of the system: battery measurements for portable use; GPU, drivers, and game compatibility for gaming.
No matched contemporary Arm-versus-x86 benchmark is established here, so a universal speed or efficiency claim would not be justified. For a Windows on Arm laptop, first check your must-have software and drivers, then compare independent tests of the specific machines under workloads like yours.

What should you check before buying a Windows on Arm PC?
- List essential apps, games, and tools. Check whether each has a native Arm version, works through emulation, or has a limitation documented by its vendor. Pay special attention to plug-ins, developer tools, and virtualization needs.
- Check hardware that depends on drivers. Confirm Arm64 driver support with the manufacturer for required printers, docks, security products, and specialist equipment.
- Verify games individually. Ask the publisher or consult its current compatibility information, particularly for games that use anti-cheat drivers.
- Compare the actual computers. Use independent tests of the exact configurations for your workloads, including sustained performance and battery life if those matter to you.
That process is more useful than choosing by architecture name alone: compatibility is specific to the operating system, app, driver, and device, while performance is specific to the processor, computer, and workload.
