It depends on the exact tumbler: “tortoiseshell” describes its appearance, not its material or care instructions. Check the maker’s guidance for the specific product before loading it. For example, Juliska approves its Puro Large Tumbler – Tortoiseshell for a warm, gentle dishwasher cycle; care instructions for acrylic tumblers vary by maker.
Why the pattern does not determine dishwasher safety
Tortoiseshell tumblers can be made from different materials, and products with a similar appearance may have different care requirements. The safest guide is the instruction for your exact brand and model—not the pattern or another tumbler that looks similar.
How to check your tumbler
- Identify the product. Look for a maker or model marking on the base, then check the matching product page or packaging.
- Confirm the material. Check whether the tumbler is glass, acrylic, or another material. Do not assume a tortoiseshell finish means it is acrylic.
- Read the care instruction. Look for explicit dishwasher permission or a hand-wash-only instruction, along with any cycle or rack restrictions.
- Check other use limits. Dishwasher approval does not necessarily mean the tumbler is suitable for hot contents, a freezer, or a microwave.
Care instructions differ by product
| Maker and product | Material | Dishwasher guidance | Other restrictions or advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Juliska, Puro Large Tumbler – Tortoiseshell | Glass | Dishwasher safe on a warm, gentle cycle. | Juliska says it is not suitable for hot contents, freezer, or microwave use. |
| Arliad, handmade acrylic tumblers | Acrylic | Hand wash only, using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or cloth. | Arliad warns that dishwasher heat may damage the acrylic and design. |
| Merritt Designs, Rope 13oz Clear Acrylic Tumbler | Acrylic | Recommends hand washing. | Merritt Designs says dishwasher rinse agents and heat can cause cracking and crazing over time. |
| Maars Drinkware, Classic Acrylic 24 Oz | Acrylic | Top-rack dishwasher safe. | Maars recommends hand washing for best results. |
These examples show why acrylic alone is not enough to determine the right method: makers’ instructions differ. Bosch’s dishwasher manual also cautions that acrylic can craze or crack and advises confirming plasticware is dishwasher safe; that general appliance guidance does not replace the tumbler maker’s instructions (Bosch dishwasher manual PDF).

How to wash it when the instructions say hand wash
- Use warm water and mild dish soap.
- Clean gently with a soft sponge or cloth; avoid abrasive scrubbers.
- Rinse and dry the tumbler.
If you cannot identify the maker or find reliable instructions for an unmarked tumbler, hand wash it gently rather than assuming it is dishwasher safe. This is a cautious choice when the product’s guidance is unknown, not a universal maker requirement.
