Third-party Synology packages are not automatically safe just because they appear in Package Center or a community repository. Synology says it cannot completely verify third-party developers’ claims or practices. Before installing or keeping a package, assess its source, permissions, data access, compatibility, and update history.

What Synology’s warnings do—and don’t—mean

Package Center is a distribution platform, not a security certification for every third-party app. Synology’s Services Data Collection Disclosure says it requires third-party developers to be transparent, but cannot completely verify their claims and is not responsible for their practices. A listing or repository connection therefore does not, by itself, establish that a package is secure or actively maintained.

On DSM 7, Synology warns that packages requiring root privileges can execute commands as root and compromise system security. DSM 7 also introduced a lower-privilege package model and restrictions for third-party packages that need root access. These controls reduce some exposure; they do not guarantee that a particular package is safe. The warning that a package is from an unverified third-party publisher is a boundary of Synology’s endorsement, not proof that the package contains malware.

Synology’s documentation on third-party packages supported on DSM 7.0 explains the root-privilege risk. Its DSM 7 developer guide describes changes to package privileges and signing. The earlier package-signing mechanism was removed, so neither an install warning nor the absence of that mechanism should be treated as a standalone malware verdict.

Review a package before you install or keep it

  1. Verify the source. Use the developer’s official source or the community repository you intended to add. For a manually installed SPK file, independently verify the exact file and publisher. Synology documents manual installation as an option, not as a security review; see its Package Center installation guide.
  2. Check compatibility. Confirm that the package supports your exact NAS model and CPU architecture as well as your DSM version. Package Center filters packages for system compatibility; community documentation also points users to compatibility and known-issue information.
  3. Match permissions to the feature. Read the requested privileges and shared-folder access. Ask whether the package needs each permission for the function you want. Treat root access as especially consequential: a package with that access can run commands as root.
  4. Review privacy and external connections. Read the package’s privacy notice, license, and terms. Determine whether it contacts an external service and what account, device, or file information that may involve. Synology notes that third-party packages may collect additional information about users or devices.
  5. Look for evidence of maintenance. Check release notes, supported upstream software and runtimes, open and resolved issues, and whether a maintainer responds. A repository being available does not establish that every package in it is maintained.
  6. Plan for updates and removal. Enable available update notifications and check Package Center routinely; some packages do not support automatic updates. Back up important data and configuration before upgrading or uninstalling, and check what happens to package data when you remove it.

What counts as a maintained package?

Maintenance is package-specific. Look for a build that supports your DSM release and architecture, an upstream version and runtime that remain supported, recent releases or issue responses, and a credible path for fixes. These signals matter more than the continued existence of a repository.

For SynoCommunity packages, the project’s Package Lifecycle Policy describes criteria for active packages, including current DSM support, supported upstream software and runtimes, and a realistic maintenance path. Packages marked disabled or retired stop being built or published. Existing installations may continue to work, but they receive no further updates under that policy. This policy applies to SynoCommunity, not every package publisher.

Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS925+ (Diskless)
  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.

For packages supplied by Synology, another developer, or a different community, check that publisher’s own support and update documentation. Synology’s support article on contacting support about third-party packages directs users to the relevant maintainers for packages supplied by developers or communities.

Updates and uninstalling: two details to verify

Package Center can manage updates and notifications, but automatic updating is not available for every package. Confirm the update behavior for the package you use rather than assuming that DSM will install every fix automatically. SynoCommunity says its packages receive updates through Package Center.

Can platform guidance tell you whether your installed package is safe?

No platform-wide warning or policy can determine the security of a specific installation. That assessment depends on the package name and version, its source, the NAS model and architecture, the DSM release, the permissions granted, and current maintainer or upstream information. Synology’s DSM 7 support page, last updated June 13, 2022, names Plex Media Server among packages it published in its examples; that dated example is not a current compatibility register or an endorsement that Plex—or any other package—is universally safe.
