Yes. IMAX can cost more than a standard screening, but the name covers theaters with very different screen sizes and projection systems. You may pay a premium for an older digital auditorium rather than the rare giant-screen 70mm experience, and the film itself may use IMAX’s taller image for only some scenes—or not at all. Checking the theater’s format, screen, seating and the movie’s presentation before booking helps you decide whether the extra cost is worthwhile.

Why IMAX theaters can be hard to compare

IMAX is a presentation brand, not a guarantee that every auditorium has the same screen, projector or image format. A 70mm film venue, a laser-equipped digital room and an older digital IMAX auditorium can all carry the IMAX name while delivering noticeably different experiences.

“LieMAX” is a derisive fan term for smaller digital IMAX auditoriums, often used in contrast with the original giant-screen venues. It is not an official format label, so the nickname alone does not tell you what a particular theater offers. A CBC columnist described a LieMAX screen as about one-third the size of a true IMAX screen; that comparison is an outlet’s characterization, not a universal measurement of every auditorium.

What the main formats mean

Presentation What is reported What to keep in mind
IMAX 70mm film (15/70) Reported as using a 1.43:1 aspect ratio, with roughly 14K–18K effective resolution, according to SlashFilm. It is the tall, large-format film presentation often associated with the most expansive IMAX image, but venues capable of showing it are rare. The resolution figure is an estimate reported by SlashFilm, not a stated measurement for every screening.
IMAX with Laser SlashFilm describes it as dual 4K laser projection, commonly on a 1.90:1 screen. Laser is brighter and sharper than older digital projection, but its resolution remains well below the reported effective resolution of 70mm film.
Older digital IMAX Original digital setups used two overlaid 2K Christie projectors, according to the available reporting. These auditoriums can be smaller than giant-screen venues, and the experience varies by room. The IMAX label alone does not identify the projector or screen size.

What are the disadvantages of IMAX?

1. The ticket premium may not match the upgrade

SlashFilm estimated a digital IMAX surcharge of about $5 over a traditional screening. DFI Rentals reported that theaters often charge $20–$30 or more per ticket, but the article date and market behind that figure were not captured. Prices vary by location, theater, film and showtime, so neither figure should be treated as a current universal price.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The value issue is that a higher ticket price does not necessarily buy the same giant-screen format people associate with IMAX. Some reporting and viewer complaints focus on smaller digital auditoriums carrying the same brand as 70mm venues. Prices can also run in unexpected directions: a CBC columnist noted that a LieMAX ticket in Saskatoon cost more than a true IMAX ticket in Regina. Compare the actual showtime prices and presentation details at your local theaters rather than assuming the IMAX ticket is the better or more expensive option.

2. Screen size and image quality vary by venue

Older digital IMAX rooms and laser-equipped rooms are not interchangeable with 70mm film venues. In particular, a smaller screen can make the upgrade over a standard theater less striking, even if the presentation remains enjoyable. Laser improves brightness and sharpness over older digital projection, but it does not turn a 1.90:1 digital presentation into a 1.43:1 70mm one.

Some viewers prefer a smaller digital screen because a giant screen can feel overwhelming or look distorted from an unsuitable seat. That is a matter of room layout and personal preference, not proof that one format is always better.

3. The tallest image may not be available

IMAX 70mm uses a 1.43:1 image, while digital and laser IMAX screens are usually 1.90:1. When footage framed for the taller 1.43:1 presentation is shown in a 1.90:1 auditorium, the image is cropped at the top and bottom compared with the taller version.

That does not mean every movie is cropped in the same way throughout. Only some films use IMAX-format footage, and some switch aspect ratios only for selected sequences. A movie can therefore have a wider image for most scenes and expand for particular scenes; the format and ratio depend on the film and screening. Also, 1.90:1 is close to the 1.85:1 ratio common in standard theaters, so it can suit films that were not shot for the taller 1.43:1 presentation.

4. Loudness complaints are real, but anecdotal

Some viewers describe IMAX screenings as painfully loud, boomy or heavy on bass; others report clear or even insufficient volume. These accounts vary by venue and screening. The available reporting did not establish a published measurement showing that IMAX theaters are uniformly louder than other cinemas.

If you are sensitive to loud sound, check the theater’s accessibility or sound policies and consider bringing hearing protection that you already use comfortably. That is a practical precaution, not an official IMAX recommendation.

5. Seating and viewing position can reduce comfort

Seat comfort is venue-specific. Some IMAX rooms have older, non-reclining seats, while other premium formats or theaters may offer recliners. In a very large auditorium, a seat too close to the screen can also make the image harder to take in and may cause neck discomfort. Check the seating map and choose a position suited to your viewing preferences rather than assuming an IMAX auditorium has upgraded seats.

6. True 70mm IMAX is difficult to find

Venues able to project 70mm IMAX are rare compared with digital IMAX rooms. DFI Rentals’ article headline said only about 30 theaters could show The Odyssey as Nolan intended, but that is a film-specific, time-sensitive claim, not a current worldwide count. Availability changes with releases and theater operations; confirm the format listed for the exact venue and showtime.

When is IMAX worth the extra cost?

IMAX is most compelling when the movie’s presentation takes advantage of the screen and sound, the auditorium’s format is clear, and you value a larger or taller image enough to pay the price difference. A 70mm screening can offer the 1.43:1 presentation; laser may be a worthwhile digital upgrade if you want a brighter, sharper image than older digital projection. A standard screening may be better value when the IMAX room is small, the film does not use IMAX-format footage, or the premium price matters more than the larger presentation.

There is no single best option for every moviegoer. Compare IMAX with the standard or other premium-format showtimes available locally, including the ticket price, seat comfort and screen details.

How to check an IMAX screening before booking

  1. Look for the specific format. Check the theater’s listing for 70mm film, IMAX with Laser or digital IMAX. If it only says “IMAX,” consult the venue’s auditorium details or contact the theater; do not infer 70mm from the brand name.
  2. Check the screen and aspect ratio if listed. A 1.43:1 presentation is taller than the usual 1.90:1 digital IMAX image. Screen dimensions and ratios are not published consistently, so treat missing details as unknown rather than assuming the room is a giant-screen venue.
  3. Find out how the film uses IMAX. Look for the film’s advertised presentation details. If only selected scenes use an expanded ratio—or the movie was not shot in IMAX format—the visual difference may be limited.
  4. Compare the total ticket price. Check the same film and approximate showtime in IMAX and a standard or competing premium-format auditorium. Local prices vary, so compare the actual listings rather than relying on a general surcharge estimate.
  5. Choose a seat for the room. Review the seating map and consider how close you want to sit to the screen, as well as whether the venue offers the seat style you prefer.
