Robot vacuums can be used in homes with pets and children, but it is safest not to treat them as child- or pet-proof. Keep children and animals away from the operating machine where the manual advises, never let them ride or sit on it, clear hazards from its route, and block areas where it could fall. Obstacle detection has limits, so supervision and preparation still matter.
Can you run a robot vacuum while children or pets are nearby?
Follow the instructions for your exact model. Manufacturer guidance recommends supervising children so they do not play with the appliance and keeping children and pets away from an operating robot; neither should stand or sit on it. Vorwerk International puts the point plainly in guidance for its Kobold VR300: “The robot vacuum cleaner is not a toy. It is a high-tech household appliance.” That is manufacturer guidance for its product context, not a rule issued by a regulator.
One separate robot-vacuum manual advises against running the appliance in a room where an infant or child is sleeping. That advice appears in the manual hosted by Alza; it should not be generalized to every model. Check your own manual for its rules on children, pets, supervision, and where the appliance may operate.
Children
The US Kärcher RCV 5 manual says children aged 8 and older may operate that model only if properly supervised or instructed and aware of the hazards. It also says children must be supervised so they do not play with the appliance, and that children need supervision when cleaning or maintaining it. This age guidance applies to the RCV 5, not all robot vacuums.

Keep fingers, hair, loose clothing, and other body parts away from openings and moving parts. Do not let a child ride the robot or handle it while it is operating.
Pets
Prevent pets from riding or sitting on the robot, and keep them away from its moving parts and dock cords. If an animal’s location or behavior makes a run impractical, close it in another room or use a suitable physical barrier. Remove pet toys and other loose items from the route. The available manufacturer guidance supports these precautions; it does not establish that every pet will be distressed or injured by a robot vacuum.
What should you clear before starting?
Prepare the floor before each run, especially in rooms where children or animals play. The Kärcher RCV 5 manual warns that a robot can catch hanging electric cables, tablecloths, or cords, and that loose objects may be knocked over.

- Remove small toys, fragile items, and other loose objects from the cleaning path.
- Keep fingers, hair, clothing, and pets away from openings and moving parts.
- Use a well-lit route and maintain the appliance as its manual directs.
Will obstacle avoidance detect pet waste, cords, or every hazard?
No. Do not rely on sensors to find every object. Xiaomi says its Robot Vacuum 5 Pro can occasionally miss dark or reflective surfaces, transparent objects, small table or chair legs, low obstacles, and items in detection blind spots. Xiaomi also says detection of objects including fabric, power cords, and pet waste decreases in low ambient light. These are limitations Xiaomi describes for that model, not a universal test result for all robot vacuums.

Xiaomi notes that dirty or failed sensors can contribute to collisions. Follow the model’s instructions for cleaning and maintaining sensors, and do not assume a feature guarantees detection.
Should you block stairs or other drop-offs?
Yes, block places where the robot could fall unless the model’s instructions specifically establish a safe way to manage that area. The Kärcher RCV 5 manual says to cordon off fall-risk locations, including unbarriered stairways and galleries. Check your robot’s manual for guidance on stairs, floor conditions, app exclusion zones, and any sensor limitations; the cited guidance does not establish a universal failure rate for cliff sensors.

What safety features should you check when choosing a robot vacuum?
There is no independent comparative test in the cited sources to establish which model is safest around children or pets. Compare documented features and instructions rather than relying on a broad “pet-safe” or “AI” label.
- How the manufacturer describes cord and pet-waste detection, and under what conditions detection may fail.
- Low-light performance and any stated blind spots or object limitations.
- Mapping and exclusion-zone controls, plus clear guidance for stairs and other drop-offs.
- Sensor-cleaning instructions and specific child- and pet-safety warnings in the manual.
A feature list cannot replace the separation and supervision precautions in the model’s instructions.
