RIDGID tools can be a worthwhile buy for DIYers who want a capable 18V cordless platform and select a model suited to their projects. Independent reviews show good results from some drills and impact drivers, but performance varies by model and compact tools are not ideal for every demanding job. The Lifetime Service Agreement (LSA) can add value, but it is conditional: check eligibility, seller requirements, registration deadlines and exclusions before treating it as part of the deal.
Are RIDGID tools worth buying for DIY?
For household repairs and occasional projects, RIDGID is worth considering when the specific tool has the performance and kit contents you need at a competitive current price. Its 18V range can also make sense if you expect to add compatible tools over time. The case is less clear for repeated heavy-duty work: a compact drill that performs well in some tests may still lack the power for a particular job.
There is no reliable brand-wide DIY reliability rate, repair rate, ownership-cost figure or warranty-claim success statistic in the available evidence. A brand-level verdict should not substitute for comparing the exact models you might buy.

R8701 subcompact brushless drill
In a March 7, 2024 review, TechGearLab reported that the RIDGID R8701 drilled a door hole with a hole saw in 22 seconds and performed well in sheet-metal tests. The same review cautioned that it lacks power for some jobs and that stronger alternatives may suit buyers with more demanding needs. These results apply to that model under the publisher’s test conditions, not to the full RIDGID drill range. Read the TechGearLab R8701 review.

R87012 subcompact drill and R87112 subcompact hammer drill
Pro Tool Reviews’ October 25, 2022 review describes these tools as suited to light- and medium-duty work. Both are listed with a published maximum torque of 500 in-lb. The review favors their compact format when access or weight matters, while recognizing the tradeoff: smaller tools may be a poor fit for heavier work. The article’s listed prices are historical, not current. Read the subcompact drill and hammer drill review.
Pro Tool Reviews says its testing often finds RIDGID close to top performers at lower prices. That is the publisher’s broad assessment across reviewed products, not evidence that every RIDGID model leads its category. Browse Pro Tool Reviews’ RIDGID archive.

Is the RIDGID lifetime warranty real?
In the US, RIDGID describes an automatic 3-year limited manufacturer warranty for qualifying power tools, as well as an optional Lifetime Service Agreement for eligible products. The LSA is not an unconditional lifetime warranty: it is for the original purchaser, is not transferable, requires timely registration and has exclusions. The agreement and the tool’s purchase documents determine what applies to an individual claim.
RIDGID’s US LSA page says eligible tools must be purchased at The Home Depot. A separate current RIDGID Power Tools page refers to purchases from The Home Depot or an authorized retailer. Because those official pages differ, confirm the exact tool and seller with RIDGID before buying on the assumption that LSA coverage will apply. Review RIDGID’s US warranty and LSA terms and check the RIDGID Power Tools LSA page.

What the LSA requires and excludes
- Registration: Register an eligible tool within 90 days of purchase.
- Original purchaser: Coverage is not transferable to a later owner.
- Proof and identification: Keep proof of purchase. RIDGID’s US terms require the LSA identification number and valid identification when obtaining service.
- Exclusions: The US LSA terms exclude misuse, abuse, neglect, unauthorized repair or alteration, and consumables such as blades, bits and sandpaper.
- Service route: The US LSA page describes service through an authorized service center.
RIDGID Power Tools also describes a digital claim process: sign in, select the tool, file a claim, ship it using a prepaid label, and receive factory-trained repair or replacement. The company says a tool may be returned in as little as 14 days; this is its stated timeframe, not a guaranteed turnaround. See the LSA claim details.
RIDGID’s registration FAQ explains the automatic 3-year limited warranty and identifies eligible LSA categories. For a particular tool, check the exact policy and purchase documentation rather than relying on the RIDGID name alone; other RIDGID-branded products may have different warranty terms. Do RIDGID batteries work with all RIDGID 18V tools?
The Home Depot says RIDGID 18V tools are compatible with RIDGID 18V batteries. That platform compatibility does not mean every kit contains a battery or charger, or that a battery is included with a bare tool. Check the individual listing for its battery requirements and included accessories. View RIDGID 18V tools at The Home Depot.
How should you compare RIDGID tools before buying?
Compare complete kits and real task needs, not just a brand name or headline torque figure. Prices and product listings change, so check them at the time of purchase.
- Match the model to your work. Look for independent results on the exact model and a comparable task. For occasional household projects, a compact brushless drill may be sufficient; repeated heavy drilling calls for a higher-output model with relevant test evidence.
- Check motor and kit contents. Note whether the tool is brushed or brushless, how many batteries are included, each battery’s capacity, and whether the kit includes a charger and case.
- Verify platform fit. If you own RIDGID 18V batteries, confirm that the tool uses the same platform. If you are starting from scratch, include batteries and a charger in the cost comparison.
- Confirm the seller and LSA eligibility. Check the exact model and retailer against RIDGID’s current terms; the official US pages use different retailer wording.
- Plan for registration and service. Save the receipt, register within 90 days if eligible, and review how claims are filed and where service is obtained. Consider whether the stated service process and possible turnaround fit your needs.
- Compare current total value. Weigh the current price against included batteries and accessories, task performance, and confirmed service eligibility. Do not rely on historical review prices as today’s price.
How does RIDGID compare with Ryobi or Milwaukee?
The available evidence does not establish a definitive brand-wide winner among RIDGID, Ryobi and Milwaukee for DIYers. Compare specific models on the same task, then consider kit contents, current price, battery platform and the warranty terms that apply to the seller and product you are considering.
