A router feature called airtime fairness may help faster devices when slower clients are sharing the same Wi-Fi radio—but it is not a universal fix. It manages how wireless transmission time is shared, and some implementations do so at the expense of older or slower devices. Check whether your router offers it, then compare performance before and after changing the setting.

What airtime fairness does

Wi-Fi clients share access to a radio channel. A client sending data slowly can take longer to transfer the same amount of information, leaving other clients waiting for their turn. Airtime fairness attempts to manage the time clients use on the wireless network rather than letting slower transmissions occupy a disproportionate share.

The intended benefit is better efficiency for the network as a whole or improved performance for faster clients. The tradeoff is that a slow client may receive less time to transmit and could see lower throughput or a less responsive connection. It does not add internet capacity or fix every cause of slow Wi-Fi.

What vendor examples show—and do not show

TP-Link Omada’s example test reports that, with airtime fairness disabled, an 802.11g client reached 28.075 Mbps download and an 802.11n client reached 18.521 Mbps; with it enabled, the reported rates were 12.214 Mbps and 116.538 Mbps, respectively. Reported total Wi-Fi throughput rose from 46 Mbps to 128 Mbps. TP-Link does not state a publication year for the support document. These are vendor example results, not an independent test or a prediction for your router: TP-Link Omada’s airtime fairness explanation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Implementations differ. NETGEAR’s support page describes its own feature as distributing 80% of network bandwidth equally across up to 50 wireless devices, with remaining clients sharing the other 20%. That is a NETGEAR-specific policy, not a general description of airtime fairness across routers: NETGEAR support.

How to find the setting on your router

First identify your router’s exact model and firmware, then consult its manual or wireless settings. Menu names and availability vary. For the TP-Link Archer AX20/AX1800 V1, the guide puts the option at Advanced > Wireless > Additional Settings. TP-Link says this function can improve overall network performance “by sacrificing a little bit of network time on your slow devices.” That description applies to that product guide, not necessarily every implementation: TP-Link Archer AX20/AX1800 V1 guide.

Some routers do not expose airtime fairness at all. ASUS, for example, documents wireless settings for supported models, but labels and available controls depend on the model and firmware: ASUS wireless settings guide.

Test it without guessing

  1. Record a baseline. Use the same speed-test method for the older device and at least one faster device. Test in the places where you notice a problem, and note whether the connection is reliable as well as its speed.
  2. Change only airtime fairness. If your router has the option and slower clients seem to affect faster ones, enable it. Avoid changing other wireless settings at the same time so you can tell what made a difference.
  3. Repeat under comparable conditions. Retest the same devices and locations, ideally at a similar time and with similar household network activity. Microsoft recommends baseline testing and retesting after network changes: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Compare the tradeoff. Check the older device’s speed and reliability, the faster devices’ performance, and how the network feels overall. Keep the setting only if the benefit is worth any loss of service for older clients.
  5. Undo it if necessary. If performance does not improve or an older device becomes unreliable, restore the original setting and check other likely causes.

Check other causes of slow Wi-Fi

A slower device is not automatically the cause of a sluggish network. Band, signal, obstacles, congestion, and compatibility can all matter. Microsoft’s guidance describes these general tradeoffs:

  • 2.4 GHz: Broad compatibility and longer range, but generally slower throughput and more congestion.
  • 5 GHz: Generally faster throughput and less congestion, but shorter range.
  • 6 GHz: Requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment and is unsupported by many older devices.
  • Channel congestion: Other networks using a busy channel can slow Wi-Fi.
  • Signal and obstacles: Distance and walls can weaken a connection.
  • Channel width: Some older adapters or drivers may not work well with 40 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz.

Check whether a device is connected to an appropriate band and whether its signal is weak where it is used. A router setting that changes airtime allocation will not remove interference, improve a poor signal, or make an incompatible device support a newer band.

When an older IoT device has trouble after a Wi-Fi change

If an older smart-home device becomes unreliable, first undo the most recent change and see whether it reconnects. Compatibility troubleshooting is model-specific: ASUS lists possible steps for older IoT devices on supported Wi-Fi 6 models, including turning off Wi-Fi 6 mode, Wi-Fi Agile Multiband, Target Wake Time, or Protected Management Frames. Do not treat those as universal recommendations for other routers; check the instructions for your exact equipment. ASUS’s compatibility page was last updated July 22, 2024: ASUS Wi-Fi 6 compatibility guidance.

Should you replace your router?

Not just because an older client is connected. Check your existing router’s manual for airtime fairness first. If the setting is unavailable, that alone does not prove the router is the cause of your problem: test the devices and investigate signal, band, and congestion before deciding whether replacement is warranted.
