A low asking price alone is not enough. In the September 2026 compatibility snapshot, the M1 MacBook Air is a promising used option because 2020-and-later M1 Air models support macOS 27; that is a current snapshot, not a guarantee of future updates.
Which older MacBooks are still worth considering?
Start with the processor and exact model, not the year alone or the “Pro” label. Apple silicon and Intel machines have different software-support outlooks, and models from the same year can have different compatibility ceilings.
M1 MacBook Air: a supported starting point
Macworld’s compatibility analysis, updated September 15, 2026, lists M1 MacBook Air models from 2020 onward as compatible with macOS 27. That makes a used M1 Air a reasonable candidate for everyday work if its configuration, condition, and price suit you. Compatibility today does not promise how many future macOS releases it will receive, and it does not establish that the machine is suitable for every demanding professional workload. Intel MacBooks: check the macOS ceiling carefully
In that same September 2026 analysis, macOS 27 drops Intel Mac support. Some Intel MacBook models can run macOS 26 Tahoe or macOS 15 Sequoia, while older models are limited to earlier releases. The precise ceiling depends on the model. A machine unable to run a currently supported macOS may lose regular security fixes and app compatibility over time, so confirm the latest model-specific position rather than relying on a seller’s description or the computer’s age.

How to judge whether a particular MacBook is a good buy
Compare the complete ownership picture, not just the listing price. There is no universal bargain cutoff established for used MacBooks; prices vary with configuration, condition, seller protections, and the cost of a newer or refurbished alternative.

How to assess battery service and repair risk
For a built-in battery, Apple recommends service through an Apple Store, Apple Authorised Service Provider, or a qualifying Independent Repair Provider using genuine Apple parts. Ask to see the battery status in macOS and, where practical, test charging and runtime. Apple says: “Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.” Eligibility is not a promise that every model can be repaired everywhere. Apple’s policy also says products are vintage when distribution stopped more than five but fewer than seven years ago, and obsolete when it stopped more than seven years ago. How old is too old for a MacBook?
There is no reliable age-only cutoff. Macworld estimates that many users get five to eight years of reliable performance, but that is a general editorial estimate—not a controlled study or a guarantee for a specific used machine. What matters for your purchase is whether the exact model can run a supported macOS and your essential apps, whether its battery and hardware are healthy, and whether service remains practical. When a newer or refurbished MacBook is the better choice
Choose a newer alternative if the older MacBook cannot run the macOS or applications you rely on, needs repairs that erase the price advantage, or lacks the memory or storage your workload needs. Compare like-for-like configurations and include any battery or repair expense. A refurbished option can be a useful comparison, but check its condition, battery, configuration, returns, and warranty; the label alone does not establish that it is a better value.
