Their results depend on simplified models and assumptions; terrain, buildings, weather, weapon design, sheltering, and population exposure can all change real outcomes. NUKEMAP’s creator describes its results as “back-of-the-envelope” estimates, and the tool says it is not for emergency planning or response.
What does “accurate” mean for a nuclear blast simulator?
A simulator calculates selected effects from inputs such as weapon yield and burst height. It is a model, not a replay of a real event. Its map may show blast, thermal radiation, prompt radiation, fallout, or estimated casualties, but each result is limited to the effects and assumptions the tool represents.
For NUKEMAP, creator Alex Wellerstein describes the visualized effects as “back-of-the-envelope” and “order of magnitude” estimates. The tool draws on published effects data and references including the 1977 edition of Samuel Glasstone and Philip J. Dolan’s The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, while acknowledging factors it does not model. See NUKEMAP and its FAQ.
That makes “accurate” a question of scope: how well does the tool estimate the effects it claims to model, given its inputs? A detailed map is not proof of precise prediction. To compare tools, look at which effects they include, how they model fallout, whether terrain and buildings are represented, how casualty estimates are produced, and whether the developer explains uncertainty and intended use.

Why can results differ from a real event?
Terrain, buildings, and sheltering
Landforms, building construction, layout, shielding, and whether people are sheltered affect exposure and damage. NUKEMAP says its effects model does not account for terrain or building shielding. A contour on its map should not be read as a uniform outcome for everyone inside it.
Atmosphere and visibility
Atmospheric conditions can change how effects propagate. NUKEMAP’s FAQ notes that its model omits factors such as atmospheric reflection and opacity, including humidity-related differences in thermal propagation.

Weapon design and burst assumptions
Yield, burst height, and weapon characteristics affect modeled effects. Surface and airbursts can produce different patterns, and NUKEMAP’s FAQ notes that some effects are simplified differently for each. A result therefore describes the selected scenario, not every possible weapon or detonation.
Fallout and changing winds
Fallout contours are especially easy to overinterpret as a local forecast. NUKEMAP describes its fallout approach as a scaling model, not a location-specific weather simulation. Its FAQ identifies burst height, fission fraction, surface material, and winds at different altitudes as important variables. A weather-driven fallout calculation requires detailed meteorological conditions and is more computationally demanding; winds can also differ by altitude.

Casualties and population exposure
Casualty estimates depend on modeled effects and assumptions about population, building types, shielding, and human response. NUKEMAP characterizes its estimates as indicative rather than definitive, and warns that they may be too high or too low for a particular scenario. Treat a displayed number as an estimate under the tool’s assumptions, not a count of expected victims.
Effects beyond the map
Some consequences are difficult to model even with specialized analysis. National Academies material identifies uncertainties and data gaps in modeling fires and their emissions after a nuclear blast, and emphasizes validation, sensitivity analysis, and explicit assumptions. This illustrates uncertainty in downstream effects; it is not an accuracy score for consumer simulators. See the National Academies report.

How should you interpret a simulator’s map?
- Check the inputs: Note the selected yield, burst height, and any other scenario settings. Different inputs can produce different results.
- Check which effects are shown: Blast, thermal radiation, prompt radiation, fallout, and casualties are distinct outputs with different assumptions.
- Read the model’s limitations: Look for disclosure about terrain, buildings, weather, shielding, population data, and casualty methodology.
- Read fallout contours as illustrative: Unless the tool documents a weather-driven model using relevant meteorological data, do not treat contours as a prediction for a particular place or time.
- Do not infer certainty from visual precision: A crisp boundary on a map can represent a simplified calculation rather than a sharp real-world boundary.
Are nuclear blast simulators suitable for emergency planning?
No. NUKEMAP’s terms describe it as an educational resource and explicitly say it is not a tool for emergency planning or response. A public simulator cannot establish what is happening in a real incident or replace instructions from local emergency authorities. For an actual emergency, follow official alerts and guidance rather than relying on a scenario map.
Frequently asked questions
Are all nuclear blast simulators equally accurate?
No blanket verdict applies. Accuracy depends on the effects modeled, inputs, assumptions, documented limitations, and intended use of the particular tool. Compare those features rather than judging by visual detail alone.

Can a simulator tell me exactly where fallout will go?
Not from a simplified scaling model. Fallout movement depends on conditions including burst characteristics, surface material, and winds at different altitudes. A location-specific prediction requires meteorological information and a model designed to use it.
Should I trust a simulator’s casualty number?
Use it only as an indicative estimate under the tool’s stated assumptions. Population exposure, buildings, shielding, and human behavior can shift actual casualties substantially.
