Not necessarily: a sale tag or crossed-out price alone does not prove you are getting a good deal. Check the item’s price history, compare the exact same product at other sellers, and include shipping and promotion terms before deciding whether to buy.

How can you tell whether a holiday discount is real savings?

Start with the price you would actually pay, not the size of the discount printed on the page. A historical chart can show whether today’s price is unusually low, typical, or above an earlier low. A comparison with current prices at other sellers can show whether the offer is competitive now.

Neither check is a complete verdict. A chart records prices within a tool’s coverage; it does not establish whether an advertised former price was legally valid, predict future prices, or guarantee that the item will remain in stock.

How do I check the price history?

  1. Identify the exact item. Note its model number and configuration, including size, color, storage capacity, or other options that affect price. Confirm the seller where relevant.
  2. Look up its history. Use a price-history service or a supported browser feature. Compare today’s price with the recent trend and longer history, not only the seller’s crossed-out price.
  3. Compare the full offer. Check the same product at other sellers and include delivery charges. Read the promotion’s eligibility terms, such as membership or coupon requirements, so you compare the price you can actually get.
  4. Decide whether the price works for you. A chart can help you judge the offer against past prices, but it cannot tell you whether a better price will appear later.
  5. Check the amount charged. Verify the price at checkout or against the scanned price in-store, and keep your receipt. The FTC also advises checking scanned prices and saving receipts in its consumer guidance on sales.

Price-history tools to consider

Coverage and features differ, so treat these as ways to gather evidence, not as a complete head-to-head ranking.

#1 Best Overall
AI Price History - Tracker
  • - Track Amazon and Flipkart prices
  • - Check product price history
  • - Monitor price trends
  • - Set target prices
  • - Get price-drop alerts
  • Keepa: Its Chrome Web Store listing describes Amazon product-page price-history charts and price-drop and availability alerts.
  • CamelCamelCamel: Its price tracker describes Amazon price-history charts, price watches, and email alerts. Its Camelizer information describes a browser extension.
  • Chrome Shopping Insights: Google’s support information describes price history and ranges across the web, as well as product tracking. Availability and interface can depend on browser support and region; check the current Chrome experience.

Before relying on a tool, check which retailers and products it covers, how much history it displays, how alerts work, and whether tracking requires an account or email address. Keepa and CamelCamelCamel are Amazon-focused; do not assume their charts cover prices across the whole web.

If you know you may buy during a holiday promotion, tracking an item beforehand can make price changes easier to spot. A sudden markdown is more informative when you can compare it with prices observed before the event.

What does a “was” or crossed-out price mean?

In the United States, the FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say that a former-price comparison is legitimate when the former price was the actual, bona fide price at which the item was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. Inflating a reference price to make a later reduction look larger can create a false bargain claim. The FTC’s advertising guidance says the same truthfulness standards apply to sale-price and comparison claims.

These U.S. materials do not establish a universal numeric lookback period for former-price claims. The European Commission describes a separate EU rule: when announcing a price reduction, shops, including online marketplaces, must indicate the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. See the Commission’s consumer-protection sweeps information. Do not treat that EU rule as a universal U.S. requirement; local rules may differ.

What should you compare before buying?

  • Product identity: Match model, size, capacity, color, and configuration. Similar-looking versions may not be the same item.
  • Seller and price: Compare the same item at current sellers, rather than relying solely on an advertised saving against a former price.
  • What you will pay: Include shipping and any conditions that determine whether you qualify for the promotion.
  • Price context: Use the chart to see whether the offer is low or typical for that item, while remembering that each tool only records prices within its coverage.

The FTC’s practical advice is concise: “Comparison shopping is your best bet.” Its guidance on shopping sales also recommends checking prices and keeping receipts.
