Foldable phones are worth considering if you’ll regularly use a large inner screen or want a phone that folds into a more compact shape. They are not an automatic upgrade: book-style and flip-style models solve different problems, and the benefit has to justify each model’s size, battery, durability and cost trade-offs.
What kind of foldable fits your everyday use?
There are two distinct designs. A book-style foldable opens into a broad, tablet-like screen; a flip-style phone folds a conventional-size handset in half to make it easier to carry when closed.
Book-style: useful when you want more screen space
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold each have an 8-inch inner display, according to their manufacturers. That larger canvas can be useful if you often read, view documents, or work across more screen space on your phone. The benefit depends on how often you open it: if most of your use is on the outer screen, you may be carrying a more complex device without getting much from its defining feature. Samsung’s Fold7 announcement and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement list the inner-screen size.
Flip-style: useful when compact folded size matters
The Galaxy Z Flip7 folds down to 85.5 × 75.2 × 13.7 mm and weighs 188 g, according to Samsung Saudi Arabia’s 2025 guide. Those figures describe that model and region; check the exact dimensions and weight for the version sold where you live. A flip’s main everyday payoff is its smaller folded footprint, not a tablet-like screen. Samsung’s guide provides the specifications.

What trade-offs matter most over a day?
Durability depends on the model and how you use it
Ingress-protection ratings are not the same across foldables. Samsung lists IP48 for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, while Google lists IP68 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. These ratings do not mean a phone is immune to damage. TechRadar advises keeping the Fold7 away from dust and sand, and Samsung says water resistance can diminish with wear. Think about your exposure to grit, moisture and rough handling rather than treating a rating as a guarantee. TechRadar’s Fold7 review discusses dust and sand; Samsung’s foldable care guidance explains care considerations.
Battery life varies by model and test
In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery test, the Galaxy Z Fold7 lasted 10 hours 55 minutes and the Galaxy Z Flip7 lasted 12 hours 24 minutes. These are results from that publication’s test, not a promise of daily runtime or a finding about every foldable. Your own screen use and other conditions can produce a different result. Tom’s Guide’s comparison reports the test results.
Support commitments can extend the useful life
Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 Environmental Report states that the model will receive seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. That is a commitment for this specific Samsung model, not a category-wide promise. Check the support terms for the exact phone you are considering. Samsung’s Fold7 environmental report contains the commitment.

- Choose a book-style foldable if you have regular, specific uses for a larger inner display and expect to open it often.
- Choose a flip-style foldable if a smaller folded form is more valuable to you than an expansive inner screen.
- Compare ownership terms locally before buying. Current regional prices and repair costs are not established here, so verify both for the model and market you are considering.
- Consider how you handle your phone and whether dust, sand or moisture are routine risks; an ingress rating does not remove the need for care.
- Check the support period on the manufacturer’s page for your exact model rather than assuming all foldables receive the same updates.
A year-in-use account can offer useful context, but it is not a reliability study. Android Central’s account of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold praises aspects of its software and ingress protection as one reviewer’s experience, not evidence of category-wide durability. Read the year-in-use account.
