They are software downloads—often DLLs, EXEs, JARs, or ZIP archives—and some launch workflows load code into the game. Treat each release like any other executable: verify where it came from, check what it contains, scan it with current protection, and do not run it if its files or instructions seem unexpected. A clean scan, published source code, or tournament origin is useful evidence, not a guarantee that a specific binary is harmless.
What a StarCraft bot download can do
BWAPI describes itself as a free, open-source C++ framework for creating agents that interact with StarCraft: Brood War. Its documented example builds an ExampleAIModule.dll, places it in the game’s bwapi-data/AI directory, and starts the game through Chaoslauncher with a BWAPI injector. BWAPI’s game-state visibility and user-input controls have defaults that can be changed, but those controls govern bot interaction with the game; they are not an operating-system sandbox. Other launchers support several file types. DropLauncher documents bot modules (.dll), clients (.exe, .jar), and ZIP files, and describes loading a bot to connect to a LAN game. That variety means the key question is not simply whether a download contains an executable, but whether the contents and launch method match the release’s instructions. DropLauncher documentation
Published bundles are not necessarily inert. The Starcraft AI Tournament Manager repository includes precompiled JARs, BWAPI DLLs, and ZIP archives of bots and maps from the 2014–2016 AIIDE competitions. Its README warns that the manager “regularly creates, deletes, and sends files over sockets,” and says to use it at your own risk. Get it from the original source
Prefer the bot author’s project or release page, or the competition archive identified by the author. Avoid mirrors and reuploads when the original is available. Microsoft recommends downloading software from trusted sources, but a repository or competition page is provenance evidence—not a safety certification. Check the archive and file types
Before extracting or launching it, compare its contents with the project’s instructions. DLLs, EXEs, JARs, data files, or a launcher may be expected for a particular setup. An unexplained installer, script, or unrelated bundled app is a reason to stop and investigate. Microsoft advises verifying where a file came from and whether its type matches expectations. Scan it with up-to-date protection
Keep antivirus protection and its security intelligence current, scan the download, and heed browser or Windows warnings. Do not turn protection off or add an antivirus exclusion just to make the bot run. Microsoft notes that unknown files may lack reputation and trigger warnings; a warning merits investigation but does not by itself prove malware. Understand what the launch process starts
BWAPI’s documented flow uses an injector and a bot DLL; other launchers may load DLL, EXE, JAR, or ZIP bot files. Identify each component you are starting and why. Stop if the instructions ask you to run an unexpected installer, disable security, grant unrelated privileges, or execute an unexplained script.

Choose an appropriate test environment
DropLauncher recommends using a copy of the StarCraft directory for the bot. A separate game folder can protect the original game setup from changes, but it does not isolate the host computer from code execution. If you do not trust a bot enough to run on your everyday system, do not run it there; use a properly isolated test environment only if you know how to configure one.

Treat source code as evidence, not a verdict
AIIDE has historically published competition source and binaries, and a 2011 rules page describes organizers requiring source files and build instructions. That can improve traceability and allow inspection. It does not, on its own, prove that a downloaded binary corresponds to reviewed source or that the binary is safe. How to compare two bot releases
There is no reliable numerical risk score in the available evidence. Compare releases on these practical dimensions instead:

Historical competition publication is useful context, not a current security audit. Assess the exact bot name, version, release URL, and files before deciding whether to run it.
