Price by itself does not tell you whether a phone is safe. A screen lock and careful app installation help, but they do not make an unsupported phone equivalent to one that still receives updates.
Check whether the exact phone still gets security updates
On Android, open Settings → About phone (the wording can vary by device) to find the Android version and security update status. You can also check the Google Play system update in Settings. Google notes that update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier, so check support for the exact model with its manufacturer or carrier rather than relying on the phone’s price or Android version alone. Google’s instructions for checking and updating Android explain where to find this information.
Ask whether the model is still supported and when it is expected to receive future updates. Older phones may not be able to run newer Android versions. A phone that no longer receives security updates is a weaker choice for banking, even if the banking app still opens.
Confirm Play Protect certification
In the Google Play Store, go to profile icon → Settings → About → Play Protect certification. Google warns that uncertified devices may not be secure, may not receive system or app updates, and may have apps or features that do not work correctly. Certification is not the same as Play Protect’s harmful-app scanning feature. A certified phone can still benefit from scanning, and certification alone does not establish that a device is currently receiving security updates.
Check the bank and payment service’s requirements
Requirements depend on the service and, for contactless payments, sometimes on your country. Before relying on a phone, check the current requirements from your bank or wallet provider for the app and payment method you intend to use.
Google Wallet verification
Google Wallet requires a screen lock and user verification for payments. Its listed verification methods include PIN, pattern, password, and Class 3 biometric unlock; Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics are not supported for this purpose. See Google Wallet’s purchase-verification requirements.
Contactless payments are not governed by one universal checklist
For the tap-to-pay use described in its India-specific help page, Google Pay requires NFC, Android 9.0 or higher, and HCE. That page also recommends a screen lock and describes an NFC setting that requires the device to be unlocked. These are requirements for the stated Google Pay use in India, not a universal rule for every wallet or country. Check the instructions for your own service and location: Google Pay Help for India.

Keep app protections enabled and install apps carefully
- Install banking and payment apps from Google Play, and avoid apps from unfamiliar websites or messages.
- Keep Android and security updates current when they are available for your device.
- Leave Google Play Protect enabled. Google says it checks apps and devices for harmful behavior and recommends improved harmful-app detection when apps are obtained elsewhere. Its guidance is available at Remove malware or unsafe software on Android.
- Use a screen lock and follow your payment provider’s verification requirements. Google also describes security alerts, app security, device locks, and update settings in Android security and privacy settings.
These protections reduce risk, but they do not substitute for security updates from the device maker or carrier.

- Current status: What Android version and security update does each phone show?
- Future support: Does the manufacturer or carrier confirm ongoing updates for that exact model, and on what schedule?
- Certification: Does the Play Store show that the phone is Play Protect certified?
- Payment compatibility: Does the phone meet the app, screen-lock, verification, NFC, and Android-version requirements for your service and location?
If a seller cannot establish the model’s update support or certification, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than assuming the phone is suitable for financial use.
