Yes. ChatGPT ads may be personalized using the current conversation and, if ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from your broader ChatGPT activity, such as past chats, memory, and interactions with ads. OpenAI says these signals help select ads inside ChatGPT; advertisers do not receive the underlying chats or personal details.
What information can ChatGPT use to select ads?
OpenAI says ad selection considers the context and intent of your current conversation, alongside information about the ad and advertiser. Depending on your settings, selected signals from your wider ChatGPT experience may also be considered. These are possible inputs, not a promise that every signal is used for every ad.
- Current conversation: the context and intent of the current thread, which OpenAI says may include personalized model responses.
- Ad and advertiser information: the ad’s landing page, title and copy, plus advertiser-provided context hints and targeting selections.
- Broader ChatGPT signals, when personalization is on: the current thread, past chats, memory, and interactions with ads, such as hiding or engaging with one.
- Basic context: general location or language. OpenAI says an ad’s language may reflect your location, language settings and conversation language.

What changes when ad personalization is off?
Turning personalization off limits which broader ChatGPT signals inform ad selection; it does not necessarily stop ads from being relevant to the conversation you are having now. OpenAI says the current thread may still inform ads, but other chat threads, ad history and topics will not be used when personalization is off.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats will not show ads. Ads and related controls are limited to eligible accounts and are rolling out in selected regions, so availability can vary by plan, location and date. Check the current controls in your ChatGPT account rather than assuming a rollout description applies everywhere.
Can advertisers see your chats, memory or personal details?
No. OpenAI says advertisers do not receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address or sensitive information, including health, mental-health or political topics. The signals used to select ads stay within ChatGPT, according to OpenAI.

Advertisers do receive aggregate ad-performance reporting, with views and clicks among the examples OpenAI gives. That reporting is not the same as receiving the conversation or personal data behind an ad selection.
How to manage personalization and clear ads data
- Open your ChatGPT account’s Settings and go to Ad controls (the exact controls may depend on whether ads are available on your plan and in your region).
- Turn ad personalization off if you do not want other chats, memory or ad interactions used to personalize ads. The current conversation may still inform ad selection.
- Use the ads-data control in the same settings area to clear ads data if you want to remove it from future ad selection. OpenAI says deletion data may remain on its servers for up to 30 days before removal.

Does the ad system affect ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says ads and ChatGPT answers operate separately: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” An ad may be selected based on conversation context, but OpenAI says that does not determine the answer ChatGPT gives.

OpenAI’s Europe privacy policy describes personalized advertising, where available and enabled with consent, as using past chats and ad interactions alongside current-chat context and advertiser information. It describes generic ads separately as using limited information such as current-chat context, location and time of day. This is a regional policy description, not a universal statement about every user’s settings or legal jurisdiction.
