A block explorer displays information about transactions already broadcast to Bitcoin; looking up an address does not itself send bitcoin or reveal a private key. The main tradeoff is privacy: a hosted explorer receives your web request, and Bitcoin’s public ledger can make an address’s history visible to anyone. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer.
Are Bitcoin block explorers safe to use?
A block explorer is a way to view public blockchain information, not a wallet that holds or transfers the funds shown. Blockstream describes its Explorer as “only collecting and displaying publicly available information about Bitcoin transactions broadcast to the network” (Blockstream Help Center). It also says it does not process or control the funds displayed.
That makes a normal lookup different from sending a transaction through wallet software: opening an address or transaction page does not change the blockchain. The practical risks are using an untrustworthy or look-alike website, and disclosing information about what you are checking to a hosted service. Use the exact domain of a known explorer and confirm the connection uses HTTPS.
Can someone see that I looked up my Bitcoin address?
The address and its on-chain history are public; a hosted explorer lookup is a request sent to the site. The operator may therefore receive connection information and may be able to associate a request with an address or transaction. This is a privacy concern if the address is already linked to your identity, but it does not mean the address itself reveals your name.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What an operator collects varies. Blockstream’s privacy policy says its sites automatically collect IP addresses, access times, browser type and language, and referring-site information. That is Blockstream’s stated practice, not evidence that every explorer records the same data. The available information does not establish that all operators retain search terms, or how long any operator keeps them.
Bitcoin’s public nature is separate from the website request. Bitcoin.org explains that every confirmed transaction is published to the blockchain, and Blockstream notes that standard Bitcoin transaction amounts are visible in an explorer (Bitcoin.org: Privacy – Bitcoin Core Features; Blockstream Help Center). Bitcoin addresses are pseudonymous, not inherently anonymous: other information can connect an address to a person.

Does checking a transaction expose my IP address?
A hosted site receives a web request, which can expose connection metadata such as an IP address. Blockstream’s policy is one concrete example of an operator saying it collects IP addresses and browser-related details. It does not prove that every explorer collects or stores those details, or that every request is retained.
Bitcoin.org’s Protect your privacy guidance discusses Tor as a way to help hide a computer’s IP address. Tor can reduce exposure of your ordinary IP address to the service and network path, but it does not hide transactions or address histories already published on the blockchain.

Can a block explorer steal my bitcoin?
A read-only lookup does not give an explorer the ability to spend bitcoin. A service that only displays public transaction data does not need your wallet’s private key or recovery phrase. Do not enter either secret into an explorer page, even if a site claims it needs them to verify an address, recover funds, or show a balance.
Be alert to look-alike domains and misleading pages. HTTPS protects the connection to the site you reached; it does not prove that the site is genuine or trustworthy. If an explorer shows a transaction, that display is not proof that the explorer owns or holds the coins. For a missing or delayed payment, check with the wallet or service that sent or received it.

How do I check a Bitcoin address privately?
If you want to avoid sending an address lookup to a hosted explorer, Bitcoin Core can process blockchain history locally to find wallet transactions. Bitcoin.org describes this local-processing model in its Bitcoin Core privacy guidance. It requires installing and using local software and entails resource and setup tradeoffs; it does not make public blockchain data confidential.
Another option is accessing a hosted explorer through Tor to reduce exposure of your ordinary IP address. This changes the network path, not the public visibility of the address or transaction. Neither Tor nor local processing removes information that is already on the blockchain.

| Approach | Who receives the lookup? | Privacy tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted explorer | The explorer operator receives the web request. | The operator may receive connection metadata; its collection and retention practices depend on the operator. |
| Hosted explorer over Tor | The explorer still receives the request, through the Tor network. | Tor can help conceal your ordinary IP address; public ledger information remains visible. |
| Local Bitcoin Core processing | Your own node software processes blockchain history for the lookup. | Avoids a third-party explorer query for that task; requires local setup and resources, and does not privatize the blockchain. |
Practical safety checklist
- Open the exact domain of a known explorer and check for HTTPS.
- Treat searches for personally associated addresses as potentially observable by a hosted service.
- Never provide a seed phrase or private key for a read-only lookup.
- Use a local-node workflow or Tor if reducing disclosure of your lookup or ordinary IP address matters to you.
- Contact the relevant wallet or payment service about missing funds; an explorer displays blockchain data but does not control the coins.
