The Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 is a wired-only doorbell with a choice of PoE or 8–24 V AC/DC doorbell wiring, a tall 3:4 camera view, and local microSD recording. Its strongest fit is a home that can provide wired power and wants several smart-home or storage options. It is less suitable if you need a battery-powered model or want to keep using your existing traditional chime: Aqara says that chime cannot be reused, though a plug-in indoor chime is included.
What the Aqara G400 offers
Aqara lists 2K video, a 165° field of view and a 3:4 aspect ratio. The tall framing is intended to show more of the area close to the door than a wide, short image. The manufacturer also specifies dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 6, WPA3, 940 nm infrared night vision, IP65 ingress protection, two-way audio, quick replies, customizable detection zones, and local motion and person detection. The unit measures 140.97 × 52.97 × 32.4 mm. Aqara includes a 15° wedge bracket for angled mounting and a plug-in indoor chime measuring 60.42 × 60 × 23 mm. Power and network: choose the installation that fits
The G400 is not battery-powered. Aqara lists two wired power options: PoE, which carries power and network over Ethernet, or existing 8–24 V AC/DC low-voltage doorbell wiring, with Wi-Fi providing network access. The manual recommends PoE when the doorbell is far from the router and Wi-Fi coverage is weak. Check your transformer and wiring, or your Ethernet route and PoE equipment, before buying; the published information does not establish compatibility with every home installation. - PoE: Makes sense if Ethernet can reach the mounting location and the network equipment can provide compatible PoE.
- Existing low-voltage wiring: Works with the listed 8–24 V AC/DC input, but still depends on Wi-Fi for network connectivity.
- Existing chime: Do not assume it will ring; Aqara says the traditional mechanical/electrical chime cannot be reused. The supplied plug-in chime is the included indoor alert option.
Video resolution depends on where you view it
Aqara advertises 2K camera output, but Apple Home has a stated 1200p limit. Aqara also says the 1200p limit applies when the doorbell is used in Aqara Home and Apple Home simultaneously. That is a platform-specific qualification, not a claim that every app, recording destination, or use of the camera always has the same output. Aqara’s product page.
In its April 27, 2026 review, HomeKit News said adding the device to Apple Home or other platforms could reduce resolution below 1080p, based on its understanding of the vertical 1200 × 1600 stream. Treat that as the reviewer’s account of cross-platform behavior, rather than a universal measurement for every configuration. The reviewer disclosed that Aqara supplied a G400 Select bundle. Smart-home compatibility and AI features
Aqara lists Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video (HSV), Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, RTSP/ONVIF, NVR, and Home Assistant support. The exact setup and features vary by platform. Aqara account linking is required for Google and Amazon integration, according to HomeKit News. The same review reports that the G400 is not Matter-certified; Aqara’s listed integrations should not be mistaken for Matter support. For HSV recording, you need both iCloud+ and an Apple home hub. Aqara distinguishes local detection from cloud features: it says motion, person, and zone detection run locally, while further event identification is among the cloud AI functions. Aqara describes the approach as combining local and cloud AI for more contextual alerts; that is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent accuracy assessment. Recording options: microSD, NAS, or HSV
For continuous local recording, the G400 needs a separately purchased microSD card. Aqara lists support up to 512 GB and says recordings can back up to an SMB-compatible NAS; both advertised options require a microSD card. HSV provides a separate cloud-recording route for users with the required Apple services and home hub. Aqara also markets a HomeGuardian subscription with cloud storage and cloud AI features; availability and terms can vary, so check the current offer in your market. HomeKit News reports that the microSD slot is inside the outdoor doorbell. That means local-only footage is physically with the device if it is removed. NAS or cloud backup may provide another copy, but neither source guarantees that a recording will reach its destination during every network failure or theft scenario. HomeKit News’ review.

What the hands-on review found—and what it does not prove
HomeKit News reported intermittent Aqara Home live-stream errors in its setup. The reviewer said the behavior improved after a software fix but still occurred there. This is an observation from one review configuration, not a verified reliability rate or a prediction for every G400. HomeKit News, April 27, 2026.
The review also said its G400 Select bundle had the same hardware as the standard G400 and included a complimentary three-month HomeGuardian subscription at the time. That bundle detail does not establish that the same promotion is currently available. The review is the only independent hands-on evidence cited here; no comparative performance benchmark is established for image quality, detection accuracy, uptime, or latency.

Who should consider the G400?
- Consider it if wired power is practical and you value PoE or low-voltage wiring options, local recording, NAS backup, or integration with one of the listed platforms.
- Plan carefully if Apple Home is your main viewing or recording route: the 1200p limit, iCloud+ subscription, and Apple home hub requirements matter to the experience.
- Look elsewhere if you need a battery-powered doorbell, insist on reusing a traditional chime, or want local footage stored somewhere other than the outdoor unit without buying and configuring additional storage.
