Apple has made a costly, long-horizon bet on spatial computing with Vision Pro. The headset was announced in June 2023 at a $3,499 U.S. starting price, reached U.S. buyers in February 2024, and has since received an M5 hardware update and a steady stream of software and content announcements. What the public record does not show is whether that makes Apple ahead of or behind its rivals in augmented reality. The “lonely” in the headline describes Apple’s distinctive framing and product path. It is not a measured market position, and this article does not treat it as one.
Spatial computing, AR and the product categories
Apple calls Vision Pro a “spatial computer.” In Apple’s description, it blends digital content with a view of the physical environment, and people control it with their eyes, hands and voice. Outside coverage often uses augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality for overlapping parts of the same kind of experience, so the labels are not interchangeable in every article. Two product categories are worth separating:
- Headsets such as Vision Pro. Apple named productivity, entertainment, spatial video and immersive environments as its initial use cases.
- Lightweight everyday AR glasses. This is a different category, built around eyewear meant to be worn through the day. The sources used for this article do not compare the two on weight, price or battery life, so no ranking between them is offered here.
If you want Apple’s current spatial-computing hardware, Vision Pro is the product Apple sells. If you are looking for glasses, it is not the same kind of device.

Software and content, beyond the headset
Apple’s activity around Vision Pro is not limited to the hardware. Three threads stand out in its public material.
visionOS 26 (announced June 9, 2025)
- Shared spatial experiences.
- Native playback for certain 180-degree, 360-degree and wide-field-of-view footage from Insta360, GoPro and Canon.
- Support for the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, which Apple says works for games.
- Enterprise APIs and support for the Logitech Muse accessory.
Apple presents these as announced capabilities. The announcement does not report how many people use them.

A specific content partnership (May 16, 2026)
An Apple Developer feature dated May 16, 2026 describes the NBA app supporting viewing of multiple games alongside stats. It also says a Spectrum partnership delivered select Los Angeles Lakers games in 180-degree Apple Immersive Video with Spatial Audio. This is a concrete example of one content experiment and one partner relationship. It is not evidence that immersive sports viewing is widely used.
Enterprise use
When Apple announced the enterprise APIs in June 2025, it described use in design, training, sales and education. Those are the use areas Apple named. The sources do not report how many organizations have adopted them.

The October 2025 M5 update
On October 15, 2025, Apple announced an updated Vision Pro with an M5 chip and a Dual Knit Band, alongside visionOS 26. Apple said the update improves performance, display rendering, AI workflows, battery life and comfort. These are Apple’s product claims as of that announcement, not independently audited results.
Reading the figures
- App counts. The January 2024 figure was “compatible App Store apps,” and the October 2025 figure was simply “apps.” The sources do not explain how Apple counted either one, so the two dates show what Apple reported, not how quickly the catalog grew.
- Content counts. The 2024 counts were 3D titles in Apple TV and Apple Arcade titles. The 2025 counts were games and 3D movies. These are different content types, so compare them only within the same category.
- Price. $3,499 is the U.S. starting price from Apple’s 2023 announcement. The sources used here do not state a price for the M5 model, so check Apple’s current U.S. pricing before comparing the two.
What was said about it
Tim Cook, introducing Vision Pro on June 5, 2023, said: “Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing.” He placed the product in a line of Apple launches: “Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing.”

Outside commentary is more tentative. In a February 2, 2024 Associated Press report, industry consultant Cathy Hackl, identified by AP as a long-time consultant who was then running a startup working on Vision Pro apps, said: “Spatial computing will enable devices to understand the world in ways they never have been able to do before.” That is a forecast from someone with a stake in the platform, not an established outcome.

The question cannot be answered from the evidence available. Apple’s dated announcements show a sustained platform effort. They do not show how Vision Pro compares with rival headsets or glasses. The sources used for this article do not establish:

- Current sales, active users or developer-ecosystem size for Vision Pro, for Apple’s competitors, or for the category as a whole.
- A market-wide definition that makes “the AR race” a single measurable contest.
- Any independent comparison of comfort, weight, immersion, content or price between Vision Pro and rival products.
Without those data, “lonely” is best read as an editorial description of Apple’s approach: a premium headset, its own spatial-computing vocabulary, and its own platform software. It is not evidence that Apple is the only serious company in the field, and it does not show that Apple leads or trails anyone.
Accessories and compatibility
PlayStation VR2 Sense controller
Apple says visionOS 26 supports the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller for games. Before buying one for Vision Pro, confirm the current support status in Apple’s documentation and check the controller’s current listing, since Apple’s statement is about games rather than every app.
Logitech Muse
Apple named Logitech Muse support in its June 9, 2025 visionOS 26 announcement. The sources used here do not establish whether the accessory is currently sold, so check availability and compatibility before relying on it.
