Apple released iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 on October 3, 2024, to fix CVE-2024-44204, a logic flaw in the Passwords feature that could cause saved passwords to be read aloud through VoiceOver. Install the update from Software Update on any supported iPhone or iPad; accessories, repairs and replacement parts do not address this vulnerability.
What CVE-2024-44204 could do
Apple’s security bulletin says, “A user’s saved passwords may be read aloud by VoiceOver.” The problem was in the Passwords feature’s logic and could expose credentials when VoiceOver was used on an affected device. A phone that was stolen or otherwise accessed would therefore present greater risk if it had not received the fix, as reported by HotHardware on October 5, 2024.
Apple credits researcher Bistrit Dahal. The company describes the remediation as: “A logic issue was addressed with improved validation.” This is an operating-system defect, so only the iOS or iPadOS update resolves it.
Which devices receive the fix
| Platform | Supported models listed by Apple |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone XS and later |
| iPad Pro | 13-inch; 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later); 11-inch (1st generation and later) |
| iPad Air | 3rd generation and later |
| iPad | 7th generation and later |
| iPad mini | 5th generation and later |
The release names are iOS 18.0.1 for iPhone and iPadOS 18.0.1 for iPad. If your model is not in Apple’s supported list, it cannot receive this particular release; check the latest software offered in Settings for that device.

How to install iOS 18.0.1 or iPadOS 18.0.1
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Choose the available iOS 18.0.1 or iPadOS 18.0.1 update and tap Download and Install.
- Enter the device passcode if requested and keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi until installation finishes.
After restarting, return to Settings > General > Software Update and confirm that no newer update is waiting. Apple may offer a later release, which should take precedence over installing an older point release.
Another security issue included in the same release
On iPhone 16 models, the update also addressed CVE-2024-44207 in Media Session. Under the issue described by Apple, audio messages could capture a few seconds before the microphone indicator activated. Apple credited Michael Jimenez and an anonymous researcher. This is separate from CVE-2024-44204: it concerns microphone-indicator timing and audio capture, not saved passwords or VoiceOver.

What the patch does—and does not do
- It does: correct the Passwords logic with improved validation and close the VoiceOver password-disclosure path.
- It does not: require a case, screen protector, charger, replacement component or repair-tool purchase.
- It does not: change passwords that may already have been exposed. If you have reason to believe someone accessed your device while it was unpatched, change the affected account passwords and review account activity after updating.
Bottom line for iPhone and iPad owners
CVE-2024-44204 was a real password-confidentiality flaw in iOS 18’s Passwords feature, not a hardware defect. Owners of an iPhone XS or newer, or one of the iPad models listed above, should install the available operating-system update rather than look for an accessory or replacement part. The same update also fixed the separate iPhone 16 audio-capture issue.
