Apple still labels iPhone Clean Energy Charging “U.S. only,” but it has not publicly explained why the consumer feature remains limited to that market. Apple’s documentation shows that the feature depends on a forecast of local-grid emissions and familiar charging locations; those requirements are useful context, not a confirmed explanation for the geographic restriction.
What Clean Energy Charging does
Clean Energy Charging uses a forecast of carbon emissions on the local electricity grid to time an iPhone charge for periods when cleaner energy production is expected. It is not simply a timer that starts charging at the same hour every night. Apple’s iPhone guide says the feature may pause charging when a cleaner period is expected soon, as long as the phone predicts it can still reach a full charge before you unplug it. If a local-grid forecast is unavailable, the iPhone charges normally.
Apple says the feature works with Optimized Battery Charging and is intended to engage at places where someone regularly charges for long periods, such as home or work. It may not engage when charging habits vary or the iPhone is in a new location. Apple’s Canada support instructions say Location Services, System Customization, and Significant Locations & Routes must be enabled for the local forecast. Apple says location information used for this feature is not sent to Apple.

The straightforward answer is that Apple has not given a public reason in its current support and environmental materials. The current iPhone guide labels Clean Energy Charging “U.S. only.” It does not say whether the limit is due to grid-data coverage, technical constraints, regulation, privacy rules, utility relationships, or another factor.

Apple’s descriptions do show what the feature needs to operate: a usable forecast for local grid emissions, plus location context and a familiar charging routine. In a related product, Apple’s Home app Grid Forecast, the company identifies WattTime marginal-emissions and curtailment data as inputs. Apple’s 2025 EnergyKit developer session also describes energy guidance drawing on a home location and local grid information, such as emissions or renewable generation, and utility-account information when available. These details make regional data and integrations relevant considerations, but Apple has not identified them as the reason Clean Energy Charging is unavailable to consumers elsewhere.
The Home app Grid Forecast and EnergyKit developer examples are separate from the iPhone charging feature. Their data sources and use cases do not establish where Clean Energy Charging is supported.

What Apple has said about the rollout
Apple’s Product Use Electricity Strategy dates the iPhone feature’s launch to fall 2022 in the contiguous U.S. In that June 2024 document, Apple said it planned to evolve the feature and incorporate additional impactful data sets. That is a statement about future development, not a promise of international availability or a timetable.

Apple’s wider environmental commitments are global, but they do not show that this particular local, time-specific forecast is available globally. In an April 2024 announcement, Apple said it had pledged to match every watt of electricity used to charge its devices with clean electricity by 2030, including through investments in markets around the world. That company goal is distinct from the availability or performance of Clean Energy Charging on an individual iPhone.
What you can do if the feature is available to you
- Leave it enabled: The iPhone can use the local forecast and charging routine to choose a cleaner time, when conditions allow.
- Resume charging sooner: If the phone pauses and you need a full charge earlier, Apple says you can temporarily resume charging.
- Turn it off: You can disable Clean Energy Charging in Battery settings if you do not want forecast-based timing.
Apple’s current guide says the feature is turned on by default. The same guide provides the controls and instructions for changing its behavior: Charge iPhone with cleaner energy sources.

- Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to your USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) enabled Mac for syncing and charging, or to your USB-C enabled iPad for charging.
- You can also use this cable with your Apple 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W or 96W USB‑C Power Adapter to charge your iOS device and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone and iPad models.
- USB-C power adapters sold separately.
- Cable Length: 2 meter or 6 feet
What is—and is not—known about its impact
Apple’s materials describe the feature’s intended behavior, but the sources cited here do not provide a measured estimate of emissions saved by an individual iPhone owner’s use. The feature aims to shift charging to times when cleaner energy is forecast; the available information does not support a specific savings figure or a guarantee that every charge will be shifted.
