For most people who want an Apple Watch for everyday health, fitness, connectivity, swimming, or snorkeling, the Apple Watch Series 12 is the better-value choice. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs $400 more at U.S. starting prices, and makes most sense if you expect to use its longer battery estimates, extended outdoor workout tracking, or recreational scuba-diving capability.
These are Apple’s current standard and Ultra models, announced September 9, 2026. Prices and feature availability can differ by region.
How do Series 12 and Ultra 4 compare?

| Water activities | Water-resistant to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010; Apple says Series 10 and later support snorkeling to 6 meters. Not for scuba diving or high-velocity water sports. | Water-resistant to 100 meters under ISO 22810:2010; supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. |
| Health sensing and readiness | New Health Sensing System and readiness features | New Health Sensing System and readiness features |
Apple’s battery figures are estimates from its stated test routines, not guaranteed runtimes. Actual battery life varies with use, settings, network, signal strength, and other factors. Ultra 4’s 45-hour outdoor workout figure applies to Max Extended Workout mode, which disables alerts and splits and makes some metrics unavailable. See Apple’s current Apple Watch comparison and the Series 12 and Ultra 4 announcements for the model details and test notes.

Which Apple Watch is right for you?
Choose Series 12 for everyday use and value
Series 12 is the sensible pick if your routine is daily wear, health and fitness tracking, staying connected, swimming, or snorkeling. It starts at $399 in the United States, and includes the same new Health Sensing System and readiness features as Ultra 4. A health-feature preference alone is not a reason established here to pay extra for Ultra.

Choose Ultra 4 for long outings or recreational scuba
Ultra 4 is the more suitable choice if you expect to rely on its longer battery estimates, track outdoor workouts for extended periods, or scuba dive recreationally within Apple’s stated limits. Its U.S. starting price is $799. The extra cost is easier to justify when one of those capabilities solves a real need, rather than simply because Ultra is the more specialized model.
How much longer does Ultra 4’s battery last?
Apple estimates up to 50 hours of everyday battery life for Ultra 4, compared with up to 24 hours for Series 12. In Low Power Mode, the estimates are up to 84 hours for Ultra 4 and up to 38 hours for Series 12. These figures provide a manufacturer-tested comparison, but they do not predict exactly how long either watch will last for you: Apple says runtime changes with use and settings, among other factors.

For outdoor workout tracking, Apple lists up to 45 hours for Ultra 4 in Max Extended Workout mode and up to 10 hours for Series 12. That Ultra mode is a trade-off, not a like-for-like promise of a full-featured workout: alerts and splits are turned off, and some metrics are unavailable.

No. Apple says Series 10 and later support snorkeling to 6 meters, but should not be used for scuba diving, waterskiing, or other high-velocity water sports. Series 12 is rated water-resistant to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010, but that rating does not mean it is approved for every underwater activity.

What should you check before choosing?
- Your actual use: If you do not need the longer battery estimates, extended outdoor tracking, or recreational diving support, Series 12 covers the everyday and snorkeling use cases described here.
- Price: The U.S. starting-price difference is $400. Compare it with the specific Ultra capability you expect to use; regional prices may differ.
- Fit and comfort: Try the case on in person if possible. Exact dimensions, weights, and comfort comparisons are not established here, so fit should be your own assessment rather than an assumption about either model.
- Health claims: Apple describes a study involving more than 1,000 participants comparing its new heart-rate sensing accuracy with leading wearables. The reviewed announcement does not provide the study paper or detailed results, so its conclusion is Apple’s report, not independently verified evidence. Apple’s description of the study.
