If HDR is greyed out or a 4K format is unavailable on Apple TV 4K, check compatibility across the whole HDMI path: the Apple TV model and format, the TV’s HDR support and HDMI input, any enhanced-video setting, the cable, and any receiver or adapter in between. Then review Apple TV’s video settings. Follow the checks below one at a time; a new cable cannot add HDR support to a TV or HDMI port that lacks it.
Why Apple TV 4K may not offer HDR or a 4K format
Apple TV’s available formats depend on the Apple TV model, the connected display, and the current video settings. A TV may support 4K but not the HDR format or refresh rate you selected. It may also support HDR only through specific HDMI inputs, or require an HDMI setting that enables enhanced video or color. A cable, receiver, sound bar, switch, or splitter can also interrupt format negotiation.
Apple says a TV needs to support HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe) for Apple TV 4K to automatically set its display format to that HDR option. With Match Dynamic Range enabled, Apple TV can display those formats at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe). The TV’s manual or manufacturer support page is the best source for that model’s exact capabilities. Apple’s 4K and HDR guidance also notes that HDR10+ is supported only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).

Check compatibility in the order the signal travels
1. Confirm the Apple TV model and the target format
Check which Apple TV model you have and identify the specific format and refresh rate you want, such as Dolby Vision or HDR10+. The model matters: HDR10+ support, for example, is limited to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), according to Apple’s format compatibility guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
2. Verify the TV supports that format at the desired refresh rate
Consult the TV manual or the manufacturer’s support page for its HDR formats and refresh-rate limits. “4K” by itself does not establish support for HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or every refresh rate. If the TV does not support the target combination, that option may not appear on Apple TV.
3. Use an HDMI input that supports 4K and HDR
Some TVs support 4K or HDR only on selected HDMI inputs. Move Apple TV to an input documented for the required format. In the TV’s settings, look for the mode that enables enhanced HDMI video or color; depending on the manufacturer and model, it may be called “Enhanced,” “Ultra,” or “Deep Color,” rather than “HDR.” Menu labels and locations vary, so use the TV manual for the exact setting. Apple describes these input and setting requirements in its Apple TV 4K format guidance.

4. Run Apple TV’s HDMI connection test
On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection. Apple describes this as a two-minute test when Apple TV is connected to a 4K-compatible TV. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable before testing. The cable must support the formats you want to use; Apple recommends looking for cables marked “Compatible Dolby Vision” and names Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as an example. See Apple’s cable and HDMI test guidance.
5. Bypass receivers, sound bars, switches, and splitters
For a direct test, connect Apple TV straight to the TV, temporarily removing any AV receiver, sound bar, HDMI switch, splitter, or other accessory from the video path. If the format becomes available, check the intermediate device’s 4K/HDR capability, the HDMI port in use, its firmware, and any enhanced HDMI setting. Check every cable in the chain, not only the cable connected to Apple TV. Apple notes that accessories can affect the connection in its 4K/HDR troubleshooting guidance.

Review Apple TV’s video settings
After confirming the display and HDMI path, open Settings > Video and Audio. Review Format and Match Content. Apple TV automatically selects the best format supported by the TV, and the manual choices available can vary with the Apple TV, display, aspect ratio, and selected format. Match Dynamic Range can preserve the original dynamic range of the content. If settings appear incompatible, choose Reset Video Settings to return to settings compatible with the TV. Apple documents these controls in Change video settings on Apple TV 4K.
If the screen is black or the picture is unstable
A missing format option is different from a picture that drops out or does not appear. For a black or unstable picture, reseat the HDMI cable, try another cable if available, and test another TV HDMI port. Confirm in the TV manual that the port supports the format you need. If the direct connection works but the connection through a receiver or sound bar does not, focus troubleshooting on that device and its cables. Apple’s HDMI and black-screen troubleshooting steps cover reseating or replacing the cable and trying another port.

When replacing the cable makes sense
Consider another cable only after checking the TV’s HDR capability, selected input, enhanced-video setting, and any device between Apple TV and the screen. If the current cable fails Apple TV’s HDMI test or does not state compatibility with the required 4K HDR format, use a cable specified for that format. Apple recommends cables marked “Compatible Dolby Vision” in its Apple TV 4K guidance. A replacement cable will not resolve a TV, port, or receiver limitation.
