Tubi is the better fit if you want a free streaming service. Apple’s TV app is a hub and storefront: it can show content from subscriptions and other apps, as well as movies to rent or buy. Seeing a film in the Apple TV app does not mean it is free.
The apps are not either-or choices. Tubi lists Apple TV among its supported devices in the U.S., so you may be able to use both on the same device. The right option for a particular movie depends on its current local listing and whether access requires a subscription, rental, or purchase.
What is the difference between the Apple TV app and Tubi?
The Apple TV app brings together content from Apple and other sources. Depending on the title, it may connect you to another app or channel, offer Apple TV subscription programming, or let you rent or buy a movie in the Apple TV Store. Apple describes these as distinct ways to access content, not as one all-free catalog. Apple TV app
Apple TV subscription means Apple’s paid streaming service, which includes Apple Originals and other programming included with that subscription. It is separate from third-party subscriptions and from rentals or purchases made in the app. Apple’s U.S. page listed the subscription at $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial when accessed on October 4, 2026; check Apple’s page for current pricing and offers. Choose Tubi when you want no-cost service access
Tubi is the clearer match for a no-cost movie service: its official help page says there is no charge to use it. That does not establish that every film you want is available there, or that its catalog will stay the same. Check the current listing for the title you have in mind.

Use Apple TV when you want a hub or storefront
Apple TV is useful for finding and accessing content across Apple’s service, connected apps, channels, and the Apple TV Store. But a film listed there may require a paid subscription, a rental, or a purchase. Check the title’s access terms before pressing play or confirming a transaction.
There is no supported, like-for-like catalog count in the available official pages to show that either option has more, newer, or better movies overall. For a specific film, compare its current listing and price or included-access status in your region.

How to check whether a movie is actually free
- Search for the film in Tubi. Confirm that the title appears in your local app and can be played through Tubi without a separate rental or purchase.
- Search in the Apple TV app. Check whether the title is included with an Apple TV subscription, linked through another service, or marked for rent or purchase. The app can surface all of these access routes.
- Compare the actual terms, not just the search result. A title appearing in an app is not proof that it is included at no extra cost. Catalogs and availability can change, so verify just before watching.

What “free” means—and what to check
“Free” can mean different things: no subscription fee, no per-movie charge, or no advertising. The official information cited here establishes that Tubi says its service is free, and that Apple separates subscription access from rentals and purchases. It does not provide a dependable ad-frequency comparison, so these sources cannot tell you how often interruptions occur.
