Apple has reportedly dismissed several engineering program managers in its Hardware Engineering division, including roughly half a dozen directors, as part of an effort to reduce management layers and move products through development faster. Bloomberg, as reported by 9to5Mac, says affected employees were given weeks to seek other roles inside Apple; those who did not find a position were expected to be laid off later in 2026. Apple’s public statements cited here do not confirm the specific cuts, and the reported layoffs should not be treated as completed.

What Apple reportedly changed

Bloomberg’s report, summarized by 9to5Mac, describes dismissals among engineering program managers (EPMs) in Apple’s Hardware Engineering division. The report says roughly half a dozen directors were among those affected. It does not establish a final count of employees who ultimately left Apple.

According to the same reporting, affected employees had weeks to look for other positions within the company. Those unable to find a role were expected to be laid off later in 2026. That is a reported possible outcome, not evidence that those layoffs have already happened.

Why Apple is reportedly making the cuts

The reported rationale is organizational: reduce management layers, make the company leaner, and put more emphasis on engineering work so products can be developed and released faster. Bloomberg’s account says John Ternus, while leading Hardware Engineering, advocated hiring fewer people, asking more of existing engineers, and reducing organizational bloat. These remarks were reported as internal context, not as a public explanation from Apple for the dismissals.

The report also says Apple may move away from relying as heavily on a spring-and-fall release rhythm and distribute more product launches through the year. That is a reported possibility, not a confirmed change to Apple’s release calendar.

How the reported cuts fit Apple’s hardware organization

Apple announced on April 20, 2026, that Johny Srouji would become chief hardware officer with an expanded remit covering Hardware Engineering and Hardware Technologies. Apple says Hardware Engineering is responsible for product design, system engineering, and reliability and durability testing, and collaborates with industrial design, hardware technologies, software engineering, and operations. The announcement describes Srouji’s leadership role; it does not announce the personnel cuts. See Apple’s leadership announcement.

Separately, Bloomberg Law reported on April 21, 2026, that the combined Hardware Engineering and Hardware Technologies division would be organized across five areas: hardware engineering, silicon, advanced technologies, platform architecture, and project management. This earlier structural report provides organizational context, but it is distinct from the later reported dismissals. Bloomberg Law’s report describes that structure.

What is confirmed—and what is not

  • Apple confirmed: Srouji’s appointment as chief hardware officer and expanded responsibility for Hardware Engineering and Hardware Technologies.
  • Bloomberg reported: dismissals of Hardware Engineering EPMs, roughly half a dozen directors among those affected, and a period for employees to seek internal roles before possible later-2026 layoffs.
  • Not established: Apple’s official confirmation of these specific dismissals, the final number of people who left, or a change to any particular product’s timeline.
  • Not demonstrated: that the reported cuts have already accelerated development or improved products.

Apple’s rising R&D spending does not confirm the cuts

Apple’s Q3 2026 Form 10-Q says research and development expense rose 32% year over year in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and 33% over the first nine months of fiscal 2026, compared with the corresponding 2025 periods. Apple attributed the increases primarily to higher infrastructure-related costs, including AI investment, and headcount-related expenses. The filing covers company-wide spending; it does not identify Hardware Engineering dismissals or show that they changed development speed. Apple’s Q3 2026 Form 10-Q provides the figures and explanation.

What would show whether the strategy is working

Fewer management layers are a stated organizational aim, not proof of faster product work. Evidence of an effect would require confirmed staffing outcomes and later reporting or company statements connecting organizational changes to development timelines. Product-launch cadence could also be observed over time, but a busier year alone would not establish that these cuts caused it.
