Apple releases beta 1 for watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1 on September 17, 2024, one day after the major operating-system launches. The developer previews began a maintenance-focused testing cycle for Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV, with no confirmed Apple Intelligence feature or major consumer-facing change.
The timing separated these three seeds from Apple’s earlier Apple Intelligence-focused testing of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Beta 1 was an early look at potential fixes, refinements, compatibility work, and platform-specific changes.
Key takeaways
- Apple’s September 17, 2024 developer betas were watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1, released one day after the major operating-system updates.
- The three beta 1 releases began maintenance testing and were not announced as Apple Intelligence updates.
- Reported beta-1 build numbers were watchOS 11.1 build 22R5545g, visionOS 2.1 build 22N5548d, and tvOS 18.1 build 22J5543e.
- Apple’s final documentation describes fixes and SDK changes involving Health, Wallet, Workout, RealityKit, video playback, Screen Saver, StoreKit testing, and SwiftUI.
- Apple recommends beta software only on secondary or non-production devices, and an Apple Watch cannot be restored to a previously released watchOS version after installing a beta.
What did Apple release on September 17, 2024?
Apple released the first developer betas of watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1 on September 17, 2024. The releases arrived one day after Apple publicly released watchOS 11, visionOS 2, tvOS 18, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia on September 16, making the three .1 seeds the start of a follow-up maintenance cycle rather than part of the initial major-version launch. Contemporaneous reporting on Apple’s beta release described the builds as an early developer preview.
The beta announcement was significant mainly because Apple extended its fall .1 testing stream to Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple TV. Apple had already been testing iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 during the summer, partly because those releases were associated with Apple Intelligence. The September 17 seeds should therefore not be described as Apple Intelligence arriving on watchOS, visionOS, or tvOS.

| Platform | Beta released | Reported beta-1 build | What beta 1 represented |
|---|---|---|---|
| watchOS 11.1 | September 17, 2024 | 22R5545g | Maintenance and compatibility testing for Apple Watch |
| visionOS 2.1 | September 17, 2024 | 22N5548d | Maintenance and SDK testing for Apple Vision Pro |
| tvOS 18.1 | September 17, 2024 | 22J5543e | Maintenance and platform testing for Apple TV |
The build identifiers are reported beta-seed numbers, not final-release identifiers. Contemporary build reporting and OTA catalog references list the identifiers for the three September 17 seeds: watchOS 11.1 build information, visionOS 2.1 build information, and contemporaneous beta-build reporting. A historical beta catalog is not the same thing as a final Apple release manifest.
Did these betas include Apple Intelligence?
No. The available evidence does not support describing watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, or tvOS 18.1 beta 1 as an Apple Intelligence release. The three operating systems followed the separate iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 testing cycle, and later coverage of the trio found no identified Apple Intelligence features. MacRumors’ report on the fifth beta round continued to characterize the updates as minor changes and bug fixes.
Beta 1 also did not come with a confirmed headline consumer feature for any of the three platforms. The defensible description is an early maintenance-release preview: Apple was beginning a cycle that could contain bug fixes, refinements, compatibility work, developer-facing changes, and platform-specific corrections. Final release notes show the eventual technical areas covered by the cycle, but they should not be treated as a complete list of features present in the first September 17 build.

watchOS 11.1 was Apple’s maintenance update for Apple Watch, with final documentation covering fixes and SDK-level changes in areas including Health-related behavior, Live Activities, networking, Wallet, Workout, and SwiftUI. Those release-note entries describe the eventual watchOS 11.1 development cycle, not necessarily every change in beta 1. Apple’s watchOS 11.1 release notes are the authoritative technical reference.

The final watchOS 11.1 release supported Apple Watch Series 6 and later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE 2. Apple released watchOS 11.1 publicly on October 28, 2024. Coverage of the final release highlighted a fix for some users whose breathing-disturbance data was written to HealthKit. MacRumors’ watchOS 11.1 release report documents that final-release compatibility and timing.
| Apple Watch compatibility for the final watchOS 11.1 release | Supported? |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 6 and later | Yes |
| Apple Watch Ultra models | Yes |
| Apple Watch SE 2 | Yes |
| Earlier Apple Watch models | Not identified as supported by the cited final-release coverage |
What changed in visionOS 2.1?
visionOS 2.1 was the corresponding maintenance update for Apple Vision Pro, and its SDK was bundled with Xcode 16.1. Apple’s final visionOS 2.1 documentation covers changes involving Apple Music, Keynote, accessibility, App Intents, app placement, compatible apps, environments, RealityKit, scenes, and video playback. Apple’s visionOS 2.1 release notes document the eventual platform and framework scope.
The Xcode 16.1 relationship matters to developers: visionOS 2.1 was not merely a consumer firmware patch, but an SDK-supported platform update for Apple Vision Pro development. The final release notes are useful for identifying technical areas that Apple addressed during the cycle, but they do not prove that every listed change was available in beta 1.
What changed in tvOS 18.1?
tvOS 18.1 was Apple’s maintenance update for Apple TV. The final tvOS 18.1 SDK, included with Xcode 16.1, documented fixes involving Screen Saver behavior, StoreKit testing, and SwiftUI availability checks. Those items indicate platform-level and developer-relevant work rather than evidence of a major Apple TV redesign or a new headline entertainment feature in the first beta. Apple’s tvOS 18.1 release notes provide the technical details.

How did the beta cycle progress?
Apple continued testing all three platforms through multiple developer beta rounds. By October 14, 2024, Apple had seeded the fifth betas of watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1. Reporting at that point still found no major new feature in the trio and emphasized minor changes and bug fixes. The fifth-beta report provides that later-cycle context.
The public outcome was clearest for watchOS: Apple released watchOS 11.1 on October 28, 2024. The September 17 announcement itself remains best understood as the opening of Apple’s .1 maintenance cycle for three platforms, not as a single coordinated public-release event for all three operating systems.
Who should install these beta versions?
Developers building or testing watchOS, visionOS, or tvOS applications, and experienced beta testers using non-production hardware, are the appropriate audience. Apple says beta software may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not perform as well as commercially released software. Apple recommends installing beta software only on secondary or non-production devices. Apple’s Beta Software Program FAQ explains the program’s risks, enrollment distinctions, and feedback process.

Apple’s public beta program and Apple Developer Program serve different purposes. The public beta program lets enrolled users test pre-release software and submit feedback, while the developer program supplies tools and access intended for application development and testing. Apple says Apple Watch and Apple TV can be enrolled in the beta program, and feedback for watchOS and tvOS betas can be submitted through Feedback Assistant on an enrolled iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Important watchOS recovery limitation
An Apple Watch cannot be restored to a previously released watchOS version after beta software is installed. That limitation makes watchOS materially riskier for a primary watch than a beta installed on a secondary device. Do not install watchOS beta software on a watch needed for dependable health, fitness, communication, or daily-use functions unless the risk is acceptable.
How do you stop receiving the beta updates?
Turning off beta enrollment prevents future beta updates but does not immediately downgrade a device. The device remains on its installed beta until a compatible commercial release becomes available. Apple’s device unenrollment instructions document the process and limitation.
Apple TV
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Choose System.
- Choose Software Update.
- Disable beta updates.
Apple Watch
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates and turn beta updates off.
The exact availability of enrollment controls can depend on the device, account, and beta program status. Disabling the setting is not a rollback procedure; it only stops the device from opting into later beta seeds.

| Reader | Recommended decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| App developer testing a platform | Consider installing on dedicated test hardware | Beta SDK and platform changes may matter for compatibility testing |
| Experienced public beta tester | Use only non-production hardware | Pre-release software can contain errors and performance problems |
| Primary Apple Watch owner | Usually wait | Apple Watch cannot be restored to the previous released watchOS version after beta installation |
| Owner expecting Apple Intelligence | Do not install for that reason | No Apple Intelligence feature was identified for these three beta releases |
The September 17, 2024 beta release was notable for its timing and breadth across Apple’s smaller platforms, but the evidence supports a restrained conclusion: watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1 beta 1 opened a routine maintenance, compatibility, and bug-fix testing cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, or tvOS 18.1 beta 1 include Apple Intelligence?

Developers can use the Apple Developer Program and the corresponding SDK tools for application testing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does turning off Apple beta updates downgrade the device immediately?
No. Turning off beta updates stops future beta enrollment, but the device remains on its installed beta until a compatible commercial release is available. An Apple Watch cannot be restored to a previously released watchOS version after beta software is installed.
Which Apple Watch models supported watchOS 11.1?
The final watchOS 11.1 release supported Apple Watch Series 6 and later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE 2. That compatibility information applies to the final watchOS 11.1 release, not necessarily to every beta build.
The Bottom Line
Apple’s September 17, 2024 beta 1 releases for watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and tvOS 18.1 were early developer previews for maintenance updates, not an Apple Intelligence announcement. Developers could test them on dedicated hardware, while most users were better served by waiting for the stable releases.
