If you want an Apple smart speaker and home hub now, the HomePod (2nd generation) is the only option here with capabilities Apple has documented. If what you want most is a screen-based, at-a-glance Apple Home interface, waiting may make sense—but the rumored hub has not been officially announced, and its reported price, features, and launch timing are not confirmed.

What each option is—and how certain the details are

HomePod (2nd generation) is an official Apple product. Apple lists its audio services, touch controls, sensors, Matter support, and role as a home hub. The other device is a rumored product described in media reports as a smart-home hub combining a speaker with a display. Apple had not announced it in the sources available as of October 4, 2026.

What the HomePod can do today

Audio and physical controls

Apple lists support for Apple Music, purchased iTunes music, third-party music services, Apple Podcasts, news briefings, ambient sounds, and AirPlay from Apple devices. The speaker has touch controls for playback and volume, including tap, double-tap, triple-tap, and touch-and-hold for Siri. These are Apple’s published capabilities, not the result of an independent listening test. Apple HomePod specifications

Home control and sensors

Apple says HomePod can control Matter-enabled accessories and act as a home hub for remote access. Apple’s announcement also describes Siri control of individual accessories and scenes, recurring automations, and temperature-based automations using the built-in sensor. The device includes temperature and humidity sensors and an accelerometer. Check the compatibility and setup requirements for each accessory; Matter support does not mean every smart-home product will work in every configuration. Apple Newsroom · Apple specifications

Alarm sound recognition

Apple announced notifications when HomePod recognizes the sound of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. Treat this as a notification feature, not a certified replacement for an alarm or emergency-monitoring service. Apple cautions against relying on Sound Recognition in situations where someone could be harmed or injured. Apple’s announcement and safety caveat

What has been reported about the rumored hub

In an August 24, 2026 report citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, MacRumors described a possible device combining a HomePod-like speaker and a 7-inch display, with tabletop and wall-mounted versions. Reported possible uses include Siri AI, FaceTime, smart-home controls, security monitoring, photos, calendar, music, and intercom. These are reported possibilities, not Apple-confirmed specifications. MacRumors, August 24, 2026

Reported timing is not a launch announcement

A September 30, 2026 report said an October 13 announcement was expected for the hub, Apple TV 4K, and HomePod mini 2. The same report said a full-size HomePod was not part of that expected October group and would be updated eventually, without a date. This is a dated expectation attributed to reporting, not confirmation from Apple. 9to5Mac, September 30, 2026

Which one fits your home?

Choose the HomePod if you want a speaker now

  • You want an officially documented Apple speaker and home hub rather than waiting on an unannounced device.
  • Audio is more important to you than a screen for browsing home information.
  • You want to use Siri, Matter accessories, scenes, or automations, after confirming your accessories and setup are compatible.

Consider waiting if a display is essential

  • Your main goal is a visual, at-a-glance way to interact with Apple Home, rather than an audio-first speaker.
  • You are comfortable waiting without confirmed specifications, price, availability, or launch date.
  • You would rather compare actual products once Apple provides details than decide based on reported features.

Don’t base the choice on an assumed price gap

The HomePod’s $299 figure is its U.S. launch price announced in 2023, not a verified price today. The rumored hub’s approximate $350 figure is unconfirmed. Compare current retailer pricing for the HomePod with official hub pricing and availability if and when Apple announces the device; the available evidence does not establish a reliable present-day price comparison.

  • Apple’s promotional description of HomePod audio is a company claim, not an independent review.
