For Apple Home today, a HomePod or a compatible Apple TV can serve as a home hub; an iPad cannot serve as a hub on the latest Apple Home architecture. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically after setup, while Apple TV must be assigned to a room in the Home app. “HomeKit” remains a common search term, but Apple’s current platform is called Apple Home.

What each device can do as an Apple Home hub

Device Current hub status Useful distinction
HomePod or HomePod mini Automatically becomes a hub when set up in the Home app. Works as a smart speaker as well as a hub. HomePod mini is one of Apple’s cited Thread-capable hub examples.
Apple TV Becomes a hub when assigned to a room in the Home app. Apple’s cited Thread-capable configuration is Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet; do not assume every Apple TV supports Thread.
iPad Not supported as a hub on the latest Apple Home architecture. It can still run the Home app and control accessories, including remotely when a supported hub is in place.
“HomePad” No official Apple product confirmation in the cited sources. Treat it as a rumored smart-home display, not available hardware or a known hub.

Apple says a supported home hub enables remote control of accessories and automations. The hub role is distinct from the device’s other functions: Apple TV can still serve as a streaming device, and HomePod can still serve as a speaker. Apple does not provide a controlled performance comparison or general reliability ranking that establishes one as universally best. Apple’s hub setup guidance covers setup, Thread, and hub selection; Apple’s iPad hub error guidance states the current iPad limitation.

Which hub fits your setup?

  • Choose a HomePod or HomePod mini if you want a smart speaker and hub together. Apple says both become hubs automatically after setup. HomePod mini is the specifically identified Thread-capable example; Apple also says HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) include temperature and humidity sensors. Apple’s HomePod guide describes its hub functions and sensors.
  • Use an Apple TV if it already suits your home as a streaming device and you want it to serve as a hub too. Add it to a room in the Home app. If your accessories require Thread, Apple’s cited Apple TV example is limited to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet.
  • Keep using an iPad as a control screen if that is convenient, but do not rely on it to keep the home connected as a hub on the latest architecture. Apple documents remote Home control on iPad when a supported home hub is present. Apple’s iPad Home guide explains that role.
  • Do not buy based on the HomePad name. Apple has not confirmed a HomePad product in the cited official materials, and its capabilities are unknown.

For Thread-enabled Matter accessories, check that your installed hub is a Thread-capable model and configuration. Apple also says a supported third-party border router can be used; hub eligibility alone does not establish Thread support.

Set up a supported hub and check which one is active

  1. Set up a HomePod: add and configure HomePod or HomePod mini in the Home app. Apple says it automatically becomes a home hub.
  2. Set up an Apple TV: assign it to a room through the Home app and Apple TV settings flow. Apple’s support page provides the current setup steps.
  3. Check hub status: open the Home app, go to Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges, and look at the top of the list for the active hub.
  4. Choose a preferred hub, if needed: in Home Hubs & Bridges, turn off Automatic Selection to select a preferred hub manually.
  5. Check Thread requirements: if a Thread-enabled Matter accessory is not working as expected, confirm that the hub is a Thread-capable model/configuration or that a supported third-party border router is available.

Why search results say an iPad can be a hub

Some older Apple documentation describes legacy iPad hub use, which can conflict with current instructions. Apple’s current support warning says an iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home. That does not prevent an iPad from controlling the Home app; it means the iPad is not the hub that supports the home’s remote access and automations. Use a HomePod or eligible Apple TV for that role.

Is Apple HomePad a real product?

As of October 4, 2026, the cited Apple support and newsroom materials do not announce a HomePad. Apple’s June 8, 2026 WWDC26 announcement describes software and Siri announcements, not a HomePad product.

Tom’s Guide reported on September 30, 2026 that a rumored Apple smart-home display might be announced on October 13, attributing the possibility to Bloomberg. That is secondary reporting about a possible future announcement, not confirmation of a product name, specifications, release, price, or availability. Do not treat the rumored device as current hardware or assume it will work as a hub.
