Review five separate controls in Apple Home: who can control the home, what HomePod can do with Personal Content, who can send audio to speakers, and how Intercom and camera alerts work. A supported home hub also matters for remote and guest access. Menu names and available options can vary by software, region, and home setup, so check the current Home app on your devices.

Start by checking whether your home has a hub

Apple identifies HomePod and Apple TV 4K as home-hub options. A supported hub is required for remote access and guest access in the documented configurations. Apple’s invitation troubleshooting guidance says shared users without a hub may be limited to controlling accessories while they are at home and connected to its Wi-Fi. Hub and software requirements also affect sharing control on the latest Apple Home version and managing remote permissions. See Apple’s invitation troubleshooting guide.

In the Home app, select the home you intend to manage before changing settings, especially if you have more than one. If remote or guest access is unavailable, confirm the home’s hub status and current software requirements first; buying another device is not necessary if an existing hub already supports the features you need.

Review who can control the home

Open Home Settings and inspect the People list. Remove anyone who no longer needs access. Apple distinguishes residents from guests: residents can access all accessories, while guest access can be restricted to selected supported doors, locks, and security-system accessories. Guest access may also be limited to a time range. Consult Apple’s guide to inviting people to control accessories for the current sharing options.

Sharing role and speaker playback permission are different controls. A person’s ability to play audio on a HomePod does not, by itself, determine their permission to control smart-home accessories. Attribution settings can also determine whether a person’s name appears in notifications and activity history when they arrive, leave, or interact with accessories.

Choose whether HomePod can access Personal Content

For each household member and HomePod, decide whether voice recognition and Personal Content are appropriate. When enabled, Personal Content allows Siri requests such as sending or reading messages, checking calendars, and making calls. That convenience gives HomePod access to personal information associated with the recognized person.

Apple’s setup guidance lists prerequisites that include using the same Wi-Fi during setup, enabling two-factor authentication, configuring location, setting up Siri, and allowing Siri to use iCloud. Availability varies by language and region. Apple explains the feature and requirements in Set up Siri and invite others to use HomePod.

Apple says, “When Siri responds to a personal content request, you receive a notification on your iPhone or iPad.” The Activity Notifications control can turn off the notification associated with a personal-content request. It does not disable every notification generated by Apple Home.

Limit who can send audio to HomePod

In Home Settings, look for the Speakers & TV access control. Apple documents three choices. This setting concerns audio playback, including adding items to the Playing Next queue and handing off audio; it is separate from smart-home accessory permissions.

Option Who can access the speaker
Everyone People nearby.
Anyone On the Same Network People connected to the home Wi-Fi network.
Only People Sharing This Home Invited home members connected to the home Wi-Fi.

You can also require a password. For a household-only setup, choose “Only People Sharing This Home” and consider enabling the password requirement. Options depend on the HomePod and home configuration. Apple’s HomePod audio access guide describes these controls.

Set Intercom notifications for each person

Intercom notification choices are Never, When I’m Home, and Anywhere. Location Services must be enabled on a device to receive Intercom notifications. Home owners or admins can manage which people and HomePod speakers can send or receive Intercom; individual members can choose when their notifications arrive. Details are in Apple’s Use HomePod as an Intercom guide.

Choose the option that fits how you use Intercom: Never to avoid these alerts, When I’m Home to limit them by location, or Anywhere to receive them regardless of location. These preferences do not control camera activity alerts, doorbell announcements, or personal-request notifications.

If you have cameras, review viewing and activity alerts

Camera settings are conditional, not a universal hub control. In the Home app, check who can view each compatible camera and which activity notifications are enabled. Depending on the camera and service configuration, supported alert categories can include people, animals, vehicles, and package delivery. Recording behavior may also differ between home and away states.

For HomeKit Secure Video, Apple says video is privately analyzed and encrypted on the home hub, then uploaded to iCloud for viewing by the owner and people with whom the home is shared. Available controls depend on the camera and service setup. See Apple’s security camera setup guide.
