For most buyers choosing between the two AirPods 5 versions, the Wireless Charging Case is the better pick if its reported $20 premium still holds. Engadget reviewer Billy Steele preferred that model for its swipeable volume control, wireless charging and longer stated battery life. Apple’s comparison page confirms those differences. The prices Steele reported in September 2026 are not verified current prices, so check today’s price and availability before buying.
What’s different between the AirPods 5 models?
Both configurations are open-fit earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC). Apple also lists Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Live Translation and Siri AI for AirPods 5. Apple says Live Translation availability varies by language and region.

These are Apple’s published estimates, not independently measured runtimes. The Wireless Charging Case model’s case is the practical upgrade: it can charge on Apple Watch and Qi-certified chargers and has a speaker to help locate it with Find My. In his September 18, 2026 review, Engadget’s Billy Steele reported US prices of $129 for AirPods 5 and $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Those are review-era prices, not confirmation of today’s retail price. Steele’s verdict was emphatic: “There should only be one model of the AirPods 5.” His preference was for the higher-tier version, particularly for swipeable volume and wireless charging. Check current pricing and stock before deciding.

If the price difference is still about $20, the upgrade makes sense for buyers who will use wireless charging, appreciate the case speaker for Find My, or value the additional stated battery time. If you charge only by cable and do not need the extra control or locator speaker, the standard case may be sufficient. Engadget’s review also reports improved sound and ANC over the prior generation; those listening impressions are the reviewer’s, not controlled measurements.
How good is the noise cancellation?
Apple claims AirPods 5 offer up to 1.5 times more ANC than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent test result. In Steele’s review, steady background noise was reduced more effectively than human voices, which remained more challenging. Treat that as one reviewer’s listening experience rather than a guarantee for every environment or listener.

AirPods 5 are open-fit, so they do not seal the ear with silicone tips. If you want that in-ear fit or need features beyond this model, compare AirPods Pro 3. Apple lists heart-rate sensing during workouts and Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection features for Pro 3. Apple’s comparison page gives Pro 3 battery estimates of up to eight hours on one charge with ANC enabled and up to 24 hours with the case.

Which AirPods should you choose?
- Choose AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if its current price premium is modest and you want wireless charging, the Find My case speaker, swipeable volume control or the longer Apple-stated battery estimates.
- Choose standard AirPods 5 if cable charging is fine and the extra case features and controls do not matter to you.
- Consider AirPods Pro 3 if you prefer silicone-tip in-ear earbuds or specifically want Apple’s listed heart-rate and Hearing Health features.
