The standard A19 in iPhone 17 is faster in the available benchmark comparisons than the standard A18 in iPhone 16. Geekbench 7’s listed device scores are about 11.5% higher for single-core and 11.7% higher for multi-core performance. Those are phone-level, user-submitted results—not a controlled measurement of the chips alone. Apple lists the same CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine core counts for both chips, while describing A19 as a newer generation of 3-nanometer technology and specifying Neural Accelerators in its GPU cores.
At a glance: A19 vs A18
| Comparison | A19 in iPhone 17 | A18 in iPhone 16 |
|---|---|---|
| Apple’s process description | Third-generation 3-nanometer technology | Second-generation 3-nanometer technology |
| CPU | 6 cores: 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores | 6 cores |
| GPU | 5 cores with Neural Accelerators; hardware-accelerated ray tracing | 5 cores; hardware-accelerated ray tracing |
| Neural Engine | 16 cores | 16 cores |
| Geekbench 7 single-core | 3,197 | 2,867 |
| Geekbench 7 multi-core | 8,473 | 7,586 |
Apple’s configuration details come from its iPhone 17 technical specifications and its iPhone 16 announcement. The process-generation wording is Apple’s description; it does not by itself establish an exact manufacturing node or a specific performance gain.
How much faster is A19 in the available benchmarks?
Geekbench 7 CPU results
Primate Labs’ Geekbench device chart lists iPhone 17 at 3,197 single-core and 8,473 multi-core, compared with iPhone 16 at 2,867 and 7,586. Calculated from those displayed scores, the iPhone 17 entries are approximately 11.5% higher in single-core and 11.7% higher in multi-core performance.

Geekbench compute result
A separate Geekbench 6.6.0 compute comparison reports 37,516 for iPhone 17 and 28,605 for iPhone 16—a difference of about 31.2% between those particular results. This is one phone comparison, not a universal measure of A19’s GPU advantage. Test version, device implementation, operating system, and result selection all affect how such a score should be interpreted.
What Apple’s specifications say about the chips
CPU and process generation
Both standard chips have six CPU cores. Apple specifies A19’s split as two performance cores and four efficiency cores; its A18 announcement confirms a six-core CPU without giving that same split there. Apple describes A19 as using third-generation 3-nanometer technology and A18 as using second-generation 3-nanometer technology. Those descriptions indicate Apple’s stated process generations, not a directly quantified A19-versus-A18 speed or efficiency result.

GPU and on-device AI hardware
Apple lists a five-core GPU for each chip and says both support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The A19 iPhone 17 specifications additionally name Neural Accelerators built into its GPU cores. Apple says these help run generative AI models on device, but the specification does not quantify a direct A19-versus-A18 graphics or AI performance advantage.

Equal core counts do not show that their throughput or power use is equal. Apple’s A19 announcement highlights Neural Accelerators in the GPU, while its A18 announcement says the Neural Engine runs machine-learning models up to twice as fast as A16. Those are different descriptions and comparators, not a controlled head-to-head test.

Why Apple’s performance claims are not a direct comparison
Apple compares each chip with an older generation, but uses different baselines:
- For A19, Apple says the six-core CPU is 1.5 times faster than A15 Bionic in iPhone 13, and the five-core GPU is more than twice as fast as A15.
- For A18, Apple says the six-core CPU is 30% faster than A16 Bionic. It describes the GPU as up to 40% faster and 35% more efficient than A16.
These are Apple’s claims against different chips, not A19-versus-A18 measurements. Combining them to calculate a direct gain would be misleading.

Should you choose iPhone 17 for its A19 chip?
If your decision is specifically about reported CPU benchmark performance, the available Geekbench 7 device scores favor iPhone 17 and A19. The specifications also identify Neural Accelerators in A19’s GPU cores. But benchmark results do not establish how much faster a particular app will feel, nor do the cited sources provide matched tests of sustained gaming, thermal throttling, battery endurance, or Neural Engine performance.
Choosing between iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 is a phone purchase, not just a chip comparison. Display, camera, battery, storage, and current price can affect the better choice, and those factors are not assessed here. Check current specifications and pricing for the exact models and region before buying.

How to read the evidence
- Specifications: Apple’s pages establish the listed core counts, features, and process-generation descriptions.
- Vendor performance claims: Apple’s figures use older, different-generation chips as baselines; they do not quantify the A19-to-A18 gap.
- Third-party scores: Geekbench reports device results and comparisons. They provide a useful point of reference, not controlled proof of a silicon-only advantage.
