Apple’s A19 is the newer chip, used in iPhone 17; A17 Pro powers iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The available Geekbench CPU submissions favor iPhone 17, but they compare whole phones—not chips tested in isolation. The GPU figures are even less conclusive because the listed results use different Geekbench versions.

Which iPhones use A19 and A17 Pro?

Apple identifies A19 as the processor in iPhone 17, while A17 Pro is used in iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. That makes this both a chip-generation comparison and, when looking at public benchmark records, a comparison between different phone models. Apple’s announcements describe each chip, but do not publish a direct A19-versus-A17 Pro performance result.

A19 vs A17 Pro specifications

Specification Apple A19 Apple A17 Pro
Associated iPhone iPhone 17 iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
Manufacturing description Third-generation 3-nanometer technology Apple described it at launch as the industry’s first 3-nanometer smartphone chip
CPU Six-core; Apple says it is 1.5x faster than A15 Bionic in iPhone 13 Apple said its CPU was up to 10 percent faster in its launch comparison
GPU Five-core; Apple says it is more than 2x faster than A15 Bionic Six-core; Apple said its GPU was up to 20 percent faster in its launch comparison
Disclosed graphics and AI features Neural Accelerators in each GPU core to help run generative AI models on-device Hardware-accelerated ray tracing; Apple said it was 4x faster than software-based ray tracing

These are Apple’s descriptions and claims, not a matched comparison between the two chips. A19’s stated CPU and GPU gains use A15 Bionic as the reference point; A17 Pro’s launch claims use a different comparison. Combining those figures cannot produce a valid A19-versus-A17 Pro percentage. See Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro announcement.

What do the CPU benchmarks show?

The Geekbench Browser records surfaced for this comparison list the following results. They are submitted iPhone results, not controlled tests of processors removed from their phones.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Phone and chip Geekbench CPU version Single-core score Multi-core score
iPhone 17 with A19 6.7.0 3,682 9,443
iPhone 15 Pro with A17 Pro 6.7.0 2,889 5,658

In these Geekbench 6.7.0 submissions, iPhone 17 scores higher in both CPU tests. Single-core performance is relevant to tasks that rely heavily on one core, while multi-core results reflect workloads that can use several cores. The scores are a snapshot of submitted device results, not a promise that every phone will reproduce them or proof that the chip alone caused the difference. The listing context also includes different operating-system details, so treat the figures as observed phone results rather than a controlled chip verdict. See the Geekbench iOS device results.

Do the GPU scores prove A19 is faster?

No. The surfaced Geekbench compute records list 37,508 for iPhone 17 and 28,272 for iPhone 15 Pro, but the iPhone 17 result uses Geekbench 6.7.0 and the iPhone 15 Pro result uses 6.5.0. Because the versions differ, the scores should not be turned into a reliable head-to-head GPU advantage. A version-matched test under the same conditions would be more useful. Apple’s specifications also show that GPU core count alone does not settle real-world graphics performance: A19 has five GPU cores and A17 Pro has six, while each has distinct disclosed capabilities. A17 Pro supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing; Apple describes Neural Accelerators in A19’s GPU cores for on-device generative AI. Those feature descriptions do not establish which chip is faster for every game, graphics workload, or AI task.

Which chip should you choose?

If choosing by generation and the available CPU benchmark snapshot, A19 in iPhone 17 is the stronger signal: it is newer, and the listed CPU submissions are higher. If you are deciding which phone to buy, however, chip performance is only one part of the decision. Compare the complete models’ price and availability in your region, battery life, display, cameras, and software support; the cited chip announcements and benchmark records do not establish those current buying details.
