There is no single screenshot size that works for every App Store or Google Play listing. Apple accepts dimensions by device display class, while Google Play sets a broad pixel range alongside separate guidance for particular device types. A technically valid image can still cause trouble if required assets are missing or the screenshots misrepresent the app. The specifications below were checked on October 4, 2026; confirm the current device requirements in the relevant console before submitting.
App Store screenshot sizes and file rules
Apple’s screenshot specifications list accepted dimensions by platform, device class, and orientation. Width and height reverse for landscape images, and a dimension accepted for one display class should not be assumed to cover every device.
iPhone dimensions vary by display class
For the 6.9-inch iPhone class, Apple lists portrait sizes of 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, and 1320 × 2868 pixels. For the 6.3-inch class, it lists 1179 × 2556 and 1206 × 2622 pixels. The exact compatible size depends on the device models covered by Apple’s table; consult it rather than choosing a size from this short list as a universal iPhone template.
Apple describes when screenshots for a larger display class are required if alternatives are not supplied, and many other classes can use assets scaled from another display class. If the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple says publishers can provide the highest-resolution screenshots required and have them scaled down. Accepted formats, count, and transparency
App Store Connect permits one to ten screenshots in JPEG, JPG, or PNG. Images must not contain alpha channels or transparency. These broad file rules do not replace the device-specific dimension requirements.
Missing required assets can block review submission
Apple states that some screenshot sizes are required to submit an app for review and that App Store Connect returns an error at submission time if required assets are missing. This is a documented submission failure, rather than a recommendation about presentation. See Apple’s App Screenshots API documentation.

Google Play screenshot sizes and device guidance
Google Play uses a broad size range for general screenshot assets, but device-specific requirements still apply. Its preview asset requirements specify JPEG or 24-bit PNG files without alpha, a minimum dimension of 320 pixels, a maximum dimension of 3840 pixels, and a longest dimension no more than twice the shortest.
The same guidance says a listing needs at least two screenshots across different device types to publish. Meeting that general publishing baseline is different from satisfying recommendation-oriented guidance or rules for specific form factors.

Recommendation-oriented screenshot guidance
For apps, Google recommends at least four screenshots with a minimum resolution of 1080 pixels, in portrait 9:16 format (at least 1080 × 1920) or landscape 16:9 format (at least 1920 × 1080). For games, it recommends at least three screenshots in one of those orientations and resolutions, depicting gameplay. Google describes these as highly recommended image requirements that affect recommendation and promotional eligibility—not as the general minimum to publish.
Tablet, Chromebook, Wear OS, and other devices
For Chromebook and tablet listings, Google gives large-screen guidance of at least four images between 1080 and 7680 pixels, in 9:16 or 16:9 format. Wear OS screenshots must use a 1:1 ratio and be at least 384 × 384 pixels. They must accurately show the current app interface and avoid device frames or added decorative material. Android TV and other device types have their own rules, so check the relevant form-factor section if the app supports them.

What can cause a screenshot upload or listing problem?
Invalid image dimensions or file treatment
On Google Play, an image outside the allowed dimensions or aspect-ratio limit, or one with an unsupported format or alpha channel, conflicts with the stated asset requirements. The same page advises against stretched, blurry, pixelated (unless intentionally part of the design), sideways, or skewed images. On Apple, use an accepted size for the relevant device class and a supported format without transparency.
Required screenshots missing
For Apple submissions, missing required screenshot sizes can produce an error at review-submission time. Use Apple’s current device table and App Store Connect’s required asset slots to check coverage; do not assume that uploading a screenshot for one iPhone class satisfies every required class.

Images that do not match the app
Google requires listing images to accurately demonstrate the real app or game experience. Its publication tips warn that a discrepancy between what the listing promises and what the app delivers may result in rejection. The Deceptive behaviour policy states: “All metadata, including the store listing, screenshots and title, must precisely reflect the app’s functionality.” Google’s broader Developer Program Policy also prohibits misleading, improperly formatted, non-descriptive, irrelevant, excessive, or inappropriate metadata, including screenshots and promotional images.
Presentation that obscures or misstates the interface
Google’s preview-asset guidance says screenshots should be clear, undistorted, correctly rotated, and not inappropriate or repetitive. It also advises removing excess notification-bar elements, such as service providers or notifications, and showing full battery, Wi-Fi, and cellular indicators. These are image-content and presentation directions; they are distinct from the general pixel-range validation rules.

- Identify the target store and device types. List the platforms and form factors the app supports, including any tablet, Chromebook, Wear OS, Apple TV, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, or other relevant listing.
- Check the live device-specific table. For Apple, match each screenshot to the display class and orientation in the current specifications. For Google Play, check the relevant device section in the preview asset requirements.
- Separate mandatory rules from recommendations. Confirm required Apple assets and Google’s general publish minimum separately from Google’s recommendation-oriented image guidance.
- Validate file properties. Check format, transparency, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, and orientation before upload. Do not rely on a general Google-compliant size where a device-specific rule applies.
- Review what the images claim. Make sure every screen reflects the current app, shows genuine functionality, and does not imply unavailable features or results.
- Inspect the final listing assets. Look for distortion, blur, irrelevant repetition, excess status-bar details, or decorative framing that violates a device-specific rule.
Platform specifications and policy language can change. Recheck the live console documentation before each submission, especially when adding device types or replacing localized screenshots.
