Apollo GraphQL Connectors let you expose existing HTTP APIs through a GraphQL subgraph without rewriting those REST services. You describe each endpoint call and map its JSON response to GraphQL fields using schema directives, then query the resulting graph. Whether that is simpler than custom resolvers depends on how your APIs behave and what your team needs to operate.
What Apollo GraphQL Connectors do
Apollo’s Connectors provide a declarative way to connect GraphQL fields to HTTP endpoints. A Connector defines how to make a request and how to translate the response into the GraphQL schema. That makes Connectors one option for putting a graph interface over REST services while leaving those services in place.
Connectors are configured in a subgraph schema. Apollo’s directive reference describes @connect as specifying how to obtain a field’s data from a REST endpoint. You can also use @source to define reusable settings, such as a service’s base URL or default headers, for Connectors that share them. See Apollo’s directive reference for the configuration details.
How a Connector maps a REST call to GraphQL
A Connector combines an HTTP request with an explicit mapping from the response into the GraphQL schema. Apollo’s mapping guide explains how the selection expression maps an HTTP response to schema fields.

Define the request
Each @connect instance describes one request. The directive supports a URL or a path relative to a configured source, and one of these HTTP methods: GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, or DELETE. The reference does not allow omitting the method or specifying more than one.
For POST, PUT, and PATCH, http.body can map GraphQL field arguments into the request body. Header mappings can forward client headers or set configured values. Batching and error handling are optional configuration areas; consult the directive reference for the supported syntax and behavior.

Map response fields explicitly
The selection mapping determines which response data supplies the GraphQL fields. Returning an object from an endpoint does not automatically expose every property in that object: nested object leaf fields must be mapped explicitly, and a selection cannot be empty.
Every Query and Mutation field in a Connectors subgraph needs a Connector. Different Connectors can provide different fields of the same GraphQL object, so the schema’s mappings also make clear which endpoint supplies each field. This explicitness helps define the graph contract, but it requires deliberate mapping rather than relying on the REST response shape alone.

What APIs and projects fit
The documented boundary is HTTP APIs that return JSON and may accept a JSON body. Do not assume that a particular content type, API behavior, or deployment setup is supported just because it uses HTTP; verify it against Apollo’s current directive documentation and linked requirements.
Connectors may be useful when you want GraphQL clients to work with existing REST endpoints and prefer schema-based request and response configuration. They are less obviously a fit when the integration requires substantial custom logic, unusual protocol behavior, or request handling that the documented Connector configuration does not cover. In those cases, compare the configuration you can express with the custom orchestration your service actually needs.

Connectors versus custom resolvers or orchestration
Both approaches can connect graph fields to REST services. The practical difference is where the integration logic lives and how much of it your team must implement and maintain.

Apollo’s description of router orchestration is a vendor account, not a guarantee of a particular latency or throughput improvement. Evaluate call patterns, failure behavior, and operational requirements for your workload rather than assuming a performance gain. What setup involves
Apollo’s introductory setup tutorial uses a GraphOS account, Rover CLI, graph credentials, a schema, and a local router. Its course instructions specify Rover v0.33.0 or later for that tutorial; this is a course-specific instruction, not a current production minimum. Before choosing versions or deployment requirements, check the linked requirements page in Apollo’s current documentation.
The tutorial’s setup steps are in Apollo Connectors project setup. Apollo’s directive reference also shows Federation v2.12 and Connectors v0.4 in an example schema. Those are example versions, not a universal compatibility prescription.
Is this a REST-to-GraphQL conversion?
It is more precise to call Connectors a way to expose REST-backed data through a GraphQL subgraph than to say they convert a REST API into GraphQL. The REST service remains the source of the data; the Connector describes how the graph makes HTTP requests and maps responses. Clients query the GraphQL interface, while the subgraph connects those fields to the underlying endpoints.
For a team considering the approach, the key questions are whether its endpoints fit the documented HTTP and JSON model, whether the required field mappings and request behavior are expressible in the directives, and whether the Connector subgraph fits its router and deployment pipeline.
