If an Apify screenshot has the wrong dimensions, first check the exact Actor’s current input schema and the saved image’s actual pixel dimensions. Viewport size, full-page capture height, and output pixels are different things: a full-page screenshot can be much taller than the browser window, and a device scale factor may affect pixel dimensions. Apify Store Actors do not share one universal set of input fields.
Check the exact Actor’s inputs before changing settings
Record the Store Actor URL or ID, version, submitted input, and the output file’s dimensions. Then open that Actor’s current input schema and identify the documented fields for viewport width and height, full-page capture, device presets, scale factor, and any maximum dimensions. Use its exact field names and allowed values; another Actor’s settings may not apply.
Apify’s SDK documentation shows the general capture flow—open a page, call page.screenshot(), and write the image buffer to the default key-value store—but this is not a universal input contract for third-party Store Actors. Apify SDK screenshot guide.
Distinguish viewport size from full-page height
- Viewport: the browser’s visible layout area before capture.
- Viewport screenshot: captures the visible window; depending on the Actor, viewport height may define the image cutoff.
- Full-page screenshot: captures content beyond the visible window, so the output height can exceed the viewport.
- Output pixels: the saved image’s pixel width and height. These should be checked directly rather than inferred from requested CSS viewport values.
For example, the published schema for Quality Website Screenshot API says fullPage defaults to true; when disabled, capture is limited to the current viewport and cut at viewportHeight. This describes that Actor’s schema only, not every Apify screenshot Actor.

Set the intended viewport and check presets
- In the selected Actor’s schema, find the exact width and height fields and any custom viewport or preset selector.
- If the Actor requires a custom preset for manual dimensions, select it before setting width and height. The Website Screenshot Capture schema, for example, lists device presets, custom viewport dimensions, and
deviceScaleFactorseparately, and says custom dimensions can be ignored when a device preset is selected. - For a window-sized result, turn off full-page mode if the Actor defines that setting as the distinction between viewport and whole-page capture.
- Check the Actor’s documented limits and defaults; do not assume dimensions or preset behavior from a different Actor.
CSS viewport dimensions and saved pixel dimensions are not automatically interchangeable. If the Actor exposes a device scale factor, consult its documentation for the exact effect and compare the final file’s pixels with the requested viewport.
Inspect the actual output
Use an image viewer or image metadata tool to read the saved file’s width and height. Where the Actor returns output metadata, compare it with the file: the Website Screenshot Capture page describes output fields including width, height, and pageHeight. That output shape is specific to that Actor; other Actors may not return those fields.

- If width is wrong, verify the selected preset and documented viewport width.
- If height is much larger than expected, check whether full-page mode is on and whether the page has long or dynamically expanded content.
- If pixel dimensions differ from CSS viewport dimensions, investigate the Actor’s scale-factor behavior.
- If dimensions vary between runs, check whether content loads or changes layout after the screenshot begins.
Wait for the page state you intend to capture
Correct viewport settings will not prevent a screenshot from capturing a page mid-transition. After navigation, wait for navigation to complete; when a particular element signals readiness, waiting for that selector can be more targeted. Use the waiting mechanism supported by the Actor’s framework and input schema. Apify Academy documents navigation and selector waiting in its page-waiting guide.
Image format is a separate setting: Apify Academy says screenshots default to PNG and JPEG can be selected through the screenshot type option. Changing PNG to JPEG does not correct viewport sizing. See Apify Academy’s screenshot guide.

Troubleshoot common size mismatches
