The page may still be loading, the site may be blocking the Actor, the selected crawler may not support screenshots, or the capture may have failed in code or during the run. Inspect the run logs and the page artifacts first; then change one likely cause at a time. The exact fix depends on the Actor ID and version, target URL, inputs, and what the returned file contains.
Start with the run logs and the captured artifacts
- Open the specific Actor run and inspect its logs. Find the target URL and follow events around navigation and screenshot capture. Note timeout, navigation, browser, and output errors. Apify recommends logging each page URL and using try/catch around code that could fail before normal logging occurs (Apify Actor troubleshooting).
- Inspect the image itself. Check its dimensions and file size, and open it with an image viewer that can distinguish a genuinely blank image from transparency, truncation, or a retrieval problem.
- Save the page HTML or another snapshot at capture time. Compare it with the image: this can show whether the page was empty, blocked, or changed. Apify author Tomas Nosek explains, “Snapshots can be either screenshots or a copy of the page’s HTML.” (Apify Actor troubleshooting.)
These checks locate the failure stage without assuming that every blank result has the same cause.
Check whether the target page finished loading or blocked the Actor
Dynamic content may appear after the initial navigation, so a capture taken too early can show a blank or incomplete page. Compare the Actor’s page artifact with what the same URL displays in a normal browser. Apify also identifies bot blocking and website changes as possible causes of Actor problems (Apify Actor troubleshooting).
- If the HTML is populated but the image is blank, investigate the screenshot stage, browser support, and capture timing.
- If the HTML is also empty or contains a block/challenge response, investigate site access and bot recognition.
- If the page content differs from the normal browser view, check whether the site changed or the Actor receives a different response.
Do not add an arbitrary delay as a universal fix. The appropriate wait condition depends on the Actor’s browser framework and the target site’s behavior.

Verify the crawler and screenshot method
Screenshot support can depend on the selected crawler. In one reported issue for Apify’s Website Content Crawler, a maintainer said Adaptive mode could not properly take website screenshots and recommended playwright:firefox. The response says this behavior was enforced in version 0.3.38 (Website Content Crawler issue 165).
This is specific to that Actor and report; it is not a general rule for all Apify screenshot Actors. Check the current Actor’s documentation and settings before switching modes, since capabilities and versions can change.

Review code, dependencies, and run resources
Look for recent code or dependency changes
Apify lists code mistakes, dependency updates, and differences between local and platform environments among possible sources of Actor failures (Apify Actor troubleshooting). If the blank output started after a change, review that change and confirm that the screenshot result is being saved or returned as intended.
Check memory and resource settings when the browser fails or stalls
Apify documents that memory allocation affects CPU and disk capacity (Apify Actor resource allocation). Review the run’s resource configuration if browser startup fails or capture stalls or times out. Low resources are a diagnostic possibility, not proof that allocating more memory will fix a blank image.

Make one change, then compare a representative run
- Choose one URL that reproduces the problem and keep the Actor input unchanged.
- Apply one targeted change suggested by the logs or artifacts, such as correcting the crawler mode for the relevant Actor or addressing a confirmed load or access issue.
- Run that URL again and compare the logs, image dimensions and size, and saved page artifact.
- Record whether the change resolved the problem before changing another setting.
Apify recommends structured logs and snapshots to help identify where an Actor fails (Apify Actor troubleshooting). Re-running one representative URL after each targeted change is a practical way to distinguish a verified fix from a guess.
What to collect before asking for help
The available guidance does not identify a universal fix without details of the specific case. Before escalating, collect the Actor ID and version, target URL, run input, relevant logs, and the returned image’s dimensions and file size. Apify’s support guidance also advises providing the relevant Actor and run information when reporting an issue (Apify Actor troubleshooting).
