Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: Apex Legends is available through both Steam and the EA app on PC, and EA says your progress and unlocks carry over when switching from the EA app to Steam—as long as the right EA Account is linked. Steam requires that link. EA documents FPS-display and cap settings for both clients, but its official guidance does not establish that either launcher delivers better FPS, frame pacing, or input latency.
What is different between Steam and the EA app?
Both launchers provide access to the same free-to-play PC game. The practical differences are account setup, launcher-specific settings, and which client you prefer to use—not a documented difference in Apex gameplay performance.
| What to compare | Steam | EA app |
|---|---|---|
| Account requirement | An EA Account must be linked to play, according to the Steam listing. | Uses an EA Account. |
| Progress when switching | EA says progress and unlocks carry over from the EA app to Steam when the correct EA Account is linked. | Official PC option; Apex progress is tied to the EA Account rather than a separate launcher profile. |
| FPS display | Can use Steam’s optional FPS counter or Apex’s in-game Performance Display. | Can use Apex’s in-game Performance Display. |
| FPS cap setting | Use +fps_max <required frame rate> in Steam Launch Options. |
Use the same argument in EA app Advanced launch options. |
| Proven performance edge | Not established by the official sources cited here. | Not established by the official sources cited here. |
EA lists both PC download options on its Apex Legends FAQ. The choice is mainly about the launcher you want to manage and the account you already use.
How account linking and progress work
Apex progress is permanently tied to the EA Account that holds it. EA says players have Cross Progression and that platform accounts need to be linked to the EA Account to use it. Progress cannot be moved to a different EA Account.

Check which EA Account is connected
- Sign in to your EA Account on the web.
- Open Connected Accounts in account settings. EA’s account-linking instructions explain where to review connected platforms.
- Confirm that Steam is linked to the EA Account that contains your Apex progress before launching through Steam.
EA warns that unlinking an account can remove access to Apex progress and content, including rewards and in-game purchases. Linking the platform to another EA Account does not restore that old progress on the new account. See EA’s Cross Progression guidance before changing account connections.
Switching is different from launching both clients
EA says account progression and unlocks carry over when moving from the EA app to Steam. That does not mean you should run both copies at once: EA cautions against launching Apex through Steam and the EA app simultaneously with the same linked account because it can cause progression issues. Use one client at a time. These points are stated in EA’s Apex Legends FAQ.

Does Apex run better on Steam or the EA app?
There is no established general winner in FPS, frame pacing, or input latency. EA’s official PC requirements provide hardware context, not a Steam-versus-EA-app benchmark. Its FPS guide documents display and cap controls for both launchers, but does not report a controlled comparison between them.
EA explains that visual output can vary with hardware and monitor, and cautions that changing the FPS cap can cause performance issues. Background programs consume system resources and can contribute to slow or laggy gameplay; multiple overlays can also cause problems. Those are troubleshooting factors, not evidence that one launcher is inherently faster. See EA’s PC system requirements, FPS guide, and background-app guidance.

How to compare performance on your own PC
A personal test can show how the two setups behave on your machine, but it should not be treated as a universal result. Keep the game and test conditions as consistent as possible.
- Use Apex’s in-game Performance Display, which shows FPS and ping. EA also documents Steam’s FPS counter as an option in its FPS guide.
- Use the same resolution, graphics settings, FPS cap, and in-game scenario for each client.
- Keep background applications and overlays consistent; close unnecessary programs if troubleshooting slow or laggy gameplay.
- Record FPS and ping across comparable sessions. Note that results reflect your PC, network, and test conditions rather than proving a launcher-wide advantage.
If changing the FPS cap makes performance worse, return to the prior setting. EA documents +fps_max <required frame rate> in Steam Launch Options and EA app Advanced launch options, and cautions that changing the cap can cause performance issues.

Which launcher should you choose?
- Choose Steam if you prefer managing Apex through Steam and can link it to the EA Account holding your progress.
- Choose the EA app if you already use it for Apex or prefer keeping the game there; EA says switching from it to Steam preserves progress and unlocks when the correct account is linked.
- Choose based on measured performance only if you test it yourself. Official guidance does not establish a general FPS or latency advantage for either client.
