Separately, Respawn confirmed that more than 355,000 PC players had been banned as of March 8, 2019. That historical count does not verify the hardware-ban claim or establish Apex Legends’ current enforcement policy.
What the 2019 report said about permanent hardware bans
HotHardware published its report on March 18, 2019. It described permanent hardware bans as reportedly being issued and traced the claim to Reddit posts containing alleged screenshots from cheating forums. The article did not cite an on-record Respawn statement confirming that the studio had permanently banned players by hardware.
HotHardware also recounted an alleged player’s attempts to return after a ban. That anecdote and the screenshots were user-posted material, not independent verification of Respawn’s enforcement method. The report therefore supports saying that a hardware-ban claim circulated in 2019—not that the specific method was officially confirmed.
What Respawn’s reported ban count does—and does not—show
GameSpot reported on March 12, 2019, that Respawn had confirmed more than 355,000 PC players were banned as of March 8, 2019. This is a dated historical figure for PC bans. It does not say how many bans involved hardware, or establish that permanent hardware bans were part of the count. GameSpot’s March 2019 report also described the PC version as using Easy Anti-Cheat.

Respawn described anti-cheat work as ongoing. In GameSpot’s account, the studio said, “We’ll need to continue to adapt to and be very vigilant about fighting [cheaters]. We take cheating very seriously and care deeply about the health of Apex Legends for all players.” Respawn also said it would be “pretty secretive” about its plans because “Cheaters are crafty and we don’t want them to see us coming.” GameSpot did not identify an individual speaker for these statements. They explain why the studio said it would keep tactics confidential; they are not confirmation of a hardware-ban policy.
How strong is the evidence for each claim?
| Claim | What the cited coverage establishes |
|---|---|
| More than 355,000 PC players banned as of March 8, 2019 | GameSpot reported this as a figure confirmed by Respawn. It is a historical count, not a current total. Source: GameSpot, March 12, 2019. |
| Permanent hardware bans were being issued | HotHardware presented this as a report based on Reddit posts and alleged cheating-forum screenshots; its story does not provide direct Respawn confirmation. Source: HotHardware, March 18, 2019. |
Digital Trends also characterized permanent hardware bans as reported in a May 5, 2019 article, pointing to Reddit and forum material. That corroborates how the claim was framed at the time, but does not turn it into an official confirmation.

What this report cannot tell players today
These 2019 articles do not establish what Apex Legends currently does about cheating. They do not specify which hardware identifiers might be used, how long a ban lasts in practice, what appeal route applies, or whether enforcement differs across platforms. The 2019 report should not be treated as a current policy update.
It also offers no reliable basis for trying to evade enforcement by changing a MAC address, reformatting a computer, or replacing hardware. The alleged screenshots and anecdote do not demonstrate that any such step works, and Respawn did not publicly detail a technical method in the coverage.
