Ape Escape makes collecting the central pursuit: you hunt monkeys and use gadgets to catch them. In the classic 2D Sonic games documented in SEGA’s Sonic Origins Plus manual, you gather rings while moving through Acts; rings can absorb a hit and, in certain games, help unlock special stages. The contrast is about these specific games—not a rule for every entry in either franchise.
What do you collect in Ape Escape?
In the original Ape Escape, the targets are monkeys, not objects scattered along a route. The PlayStation Store describes it as a monkey-hunting adventure and names tools including a monkey-net, slingshot, propeller, radio-controlled car, and monkey radar. The gadgets support the pursuit and catching objective; the listing also describes more than 20 levels and bonus mini-games.
This makes collecting an active goal: find and catch the characters. The official listing establishes the gadgets’ names, but not detailed rules for monkey behavior, control schemes, or the order in which tools become available.
What do rings do in classic Sonic?
SEGA’s Sonic Origins Plus online manual covers a collection of classic 2D action-scrollers. Its games organize play into Zones and Acts, with multiple routes through Acts. Rings are picked up as Sonic traverses those routes, so collection is integrated into movement rather than being the main capture objective.

Rings as protection
The manual says rings protect Sonic from damage once. When he is hit, the rings scatter. They do not prevent every loss: hazards such as falling into a hole or remaining underwater too long can still cost a try.
Rings as a route to special stages
Rings can also contribute to access to special stages, but the entry conditions vary by game. SEGA’s manual gives examples such as reaching an Act goal with a required number of rings or passing a marker. It would be inaccurate to treat one ring threshold or one special-stage rule as universal across the collection.

The difference is one of emphasis. Ape Escape turns collecting into pursuit and capture; the documented Sonic games make rings part of traversal, defense, and—in some titles—optional challenge access. Neither description should be extended to every 3D or modern Sonic game, or to every later Ape Escape release.
