To sign in to AOL Mail, open mail.aol.com, enter your AOL username or the recovery information requested, and select Sign in. AOL may ask for a verification code if your device, browser, program, or location is unfamiliar.
This guide covers browser sign-in, password recovery, verification prompts, sign-in loops, blank pages, mobile access, and app passwords for some third-party mail apps.
How to sign in to AOL Mail in a browser
- Open mail.aol.com in a supported, up-to-date browser.
- Enter your AOL username or the account-recovery item requested on the sign-in page.
- If prompted, enter your password.
- Select Sign in.
- If AOL asks you to verify the sign-in, retrieve the code from your recovery phone or alternate email address and enter it on the page.
AOL may ask for a verification code when you sign in from an unfamiliar device, browser, program, or location. With two-step verification enabled, it may not request another code for the same device, browser, or location after successful verification.
What to do if AOL shows “First time signing in here?”
This message can appear when AOL does not recognize the device, program, browser, or location. Choose an available verification option and request a code. AOL sends it to a recovery phone number or alternate email address associated with the account.

- Check that the phone number or email address shown belongs to you.
- Choose a delivery method you can access.
- Retrieve the latest code and enter it on the page.
- Complete sign-in.
Do not share a verification code with anyone claiming to be AOL support.
Forgot your AOL username or password?
Use AOL’s Sign-in Helper rather than repeatedly guessing credentials. The normal recovery process requires access to a recovery phone number or alternate email address.
- Open the AOL sign-in page and choose the link for a forgotten username or password to open Sign-in Helper.
- Enter an available recovery item, such as your recovery mobile number or alternate email address.
- Select Continue.
- Follow the recovery instructions AOL displays.
- Return to the sign-in page and use the recovered account information or new password.
If the recovery phone number or alternate email is incorrect or unavailable, Sign-in Helper may not be able to restore access. Check whether you are entering information associated with the correct AOL account.
Change a known AOL password
If you can sign in and know your current password, change it from the AOL Account Security page:
- Sign in to your AOL account.
- Open the AOL Account security page.
- Select Change password.
- Enter the new password.
- Select Continue.
After changing the main password, update mail applications that use the account. An older application may need an AOL app password instead of your account password.
Fix the “Invalid Password” error
AOL uses “Invalid Password” when the username and password combination does not match its records. Check these possible causes:
| Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Caps Lock or Num Lock | Turn off Caps Lock and verify that the number row or numeric keypad produces the expected characters. |
| Browser autofill | Delete the saved AOL password and type the current password manually. Autofill may still contain a password from before you changed it. |
| Typing mistake | Check the username, punctuation, spaces, and letter case. Avoid copying an accidental trailing space. |
| Outdated browser | Update the browser or try another current browser. |
| Unauthorized change | If the password changed without your permission, use Sign-in Helper and secure the account after recovery. |
AOL says it never asks for your account password by email or phone call. Treat messages requesting it as suspicious.

Fix an AOL sign-in loop
If the page reloads after you select Sign in and never opens the inbox, reset the sign-in cookie:

- Select Not you?.
- Re-enter the username and password.
- Select Sign in.
If the loop continues, try these fixes in order:
- Clear AOL cookies and cached site data.
- Close and restart the browser.
- Test in another supported browser.
- Try another AOL sign-in page, including mail.aol.com.
Clearing cookies signs you out of websites and may remove saved site preferences.
Fix a blank, missing, or constantly loading AOL Mail page
A blank inbox or loading screen can be caused by browser settings, cached data, disabled JavaScript or cookies, pop-up blocking, firewall rules, or an outdated browser.
- Update the browser.
- Make sure JavaScript and cookies are enabled for AOL.
- Clear the browser cache and AOL site data.
- Adjust a pop-up blocker if it is preventing the sign-in flow.
- Test another browser or device.
- Check firewall or network-filtering rules.
If firewall or pop-up software supports allowlisting, AOL lists these friendly URLs:
- *.aol.com
- registration.aol.com
- webmail.aol.com
Only change firewall or security settings if you understand the risk and can restore them afterward. On a work or school network, an administrator may need to help.

Sign in to AOL Mail on a phone or tablet
Using the AOL app
AOL Mail is available through the AOL app on Android and iOS. Install or update the app through the device’s official app store, open it, choose the AOL Mail sign-in option, and complete the username, password, and any verification steps.
On Android, AOL says Google Chrome or a Chrome-based browser must be installed and enabled for sign-in. If the app returns to the sign-in screen, update or enable Chrome before retrying.

Using Apple Mail or another built-in mail app
iOS and Android native mail apps generally support automatic AOL setup. If automatic setup fails, AOL says manual POP or IMAP configuration may be required.
For Apple Mail on iOS or macOS and Samsung Mail, AOL recommends removing and re-adding the account and selecting the AOL provider or logo during setup. This activates the secure sign-in method. Manual setup may be necessary if automatic setup is unavailable.
When an email application needs an AOL app password
A third-party mail application may not use AOL’s branded sign-in page. Older applications that do not support AOL’s OAuth2 secure sign-in method can require a separate app password. This is not limited to accounts using two-step verification.
AOL’s current help documentation says that, as of May 2020, Windows Mail, Gmail’s mobile app, Outlook Desktop, and Outlook for Mac did not support AOL’s OAuth2 method and may require an app password. Check your application’s current support because compatibility depends on the version.
Create an AOL app password
- Open the AOL Account Security page in a browser.
- Select Generate app password or Generate and manage app passwords.
- Select Get Started.
- Enter a name for the application.
- Select Generate password.
- Copy the displayed one-time password into the mail application when it asks for your AOL password.
- Select Done.
Use the generated password exactly as displayed. It is separate from your normal AOL password.
AOL recommends generating an app password in a browser that has been used to sign in to AOL Mail for several consecutive days. Do not use Incognito mode. AOL says Customer Care cannot override its eligibility decision if app-password creation is unavailable.

- Open the AOL Account Security page.
- Select Generate and manage app passwords.
- Select Delete beside the app password.
- Select Delete again to confirm.
Delete an app password if the device is lost, the application is no longer used, or you suspect the password has been exposed.
Fix secure-connection or certificate errors
A certificate warning in a mail application usually points to outdated device software, not an incorrect AOL password. AOL says devices roughly 7–8 years old or older, devices without system updates for three or more years, and devices that no longer receive manufacturer security updates may fail to recognize newer security certificates.
Install available operating-system and mail-app updates, then restart the device. If no updates are available, use AOL Mail in a current browser or move the account to a supported device. Do not bypass a certificate warning just to make an old mail app connect.

Thunderbird-specific re-add steps
For Thunderbird, AOL’s documented re-add process is:
- Open Tools → Account Settings.
- Select the AOL account.
- Open Account Actions → Remove Accounts.
- Add the account again through Account Actions → Add Accounts.
Thunderbird should then activate the secure sign-in method automatically. If it repeatedly asks for a password, check whether the application is current and whether AOL requires an app password for that installation.
After you regain access
- Review the recovery phone number and alternate email address.
- Enable two-step verification or a passkey if your account and device support it.
- Remove unknown mail applications and delete unused app passwords.
- Change the password again if you believe someone else accessed the account.
- Check sent mail, forwarding rules, filters, and account activity for changes you did not make.
AOL’s Mail help documentation lists passkeys for supported smart devices, using face, fingerprint, or PIN authentication. Availability can depend on the account, device, and AOL interface.

Why does AOL keep asking me to verify my identity?
AOL can request a code when the device, browser, program, or location is unfamiliar. The code is sent to the recovery phone number or alternate email address on the account.
Why does AOL say my password is invalid?
Check Caps Lock, Num Lock, browser autofill, typing errors, and whether the password was recently changed. An unauthorized password change or outdated browser can also cause the error.
Can I recover an AOL account without its recovery phone or email?
AOL’s normal Sign-in Helper process requires access to an available recovery phone number or alternate email address. If both are wrong or inaccessible, you may be unable to recover the account through that process.
Do I need an AOL app password for every mail app?
No. Apps that use AOL’s branded sign-in can normally use the standard sign-in flow. Older third-party apps without AOL OAuth2 support may require an app password, even when two-step verification is not the reason.

No. AOL says app passwords remain active after the main account password changes. Delete them manually from AOL Account Security → Generate and manage app passwords.
The Bottom Line
For normal access, use mail.aol.com and complete any verification prompt. Use Sign-in Helper if you cannot identify the account or password, reset the sign-in cookie if the page loops, and check browser settings if the inbox is blank. Older mail applications may need an AOL-generated app password rather than your main account password.
