Anthropic was reported in July 2026 to be exploring an in-house AI chip and discussing possible manufacturing with Samsung. The reporting does not confirm a Samsung deal, use of Samsung’s 2nm process, or a 4,000 TOPS performance rating. Those claims should be treated as unverified, not as specifications of a confirmed chip.
What was reported about Anthropic’s chip?
On July 2, 2026, The Information reported that Anthropic had begun early-stage work on an in-house chip and held talks with Samsung about potentially manufacturing it. The account attributed its information to three people with direct knowledge. It described exploratory work and discussions, not a completed design or signed manufacturing agreement.
TechCrunch’s July 2 report said Anthropic had not decided what the chip would be used for, how it might fit into servers, or how much power it would consume. Anthropic also said a diversified hardware stack—including chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia—would remain pivotal to its compute strategy. The reported exploration therefore does not establish that Anthropic intends to replace those suppliers.
Is the chip rated at 4,000 TOPS?
No source in the available reporting verifies 4,000 TOPS as a specification for Anthropic’s chip. Searches for that figure surfaced unrelated hardware, not evidence tying it to Anthropic. Until a direct source connects the number to an Anthropic design and explains the measurement context, it should not be repeated as the chip’s performance.

TOPS means trillion operations per second, but a TOPS figure alone is not a complete way to compare AI processors. Any meaningful comparison would need to identify the precision and workload measured, as well as the relevant power and measurement conditions. No such context or performance target has been established for Anthropic’s reported project.
Has Samsung confirmed a 2nm deal with Anthropic?
No. Samsung’s July 25, 2026 announcement describes a separate memorandum of understanding with Broadcom, including collaboration on Samsung 2nm and below processes for Broadcom products. It names Broadcom, not Anthropic, and does not confirm a Samsung–Anthropic agreement. Samsung’s announcement is evidence of its foundry activity, not of the process or manufacturer for Anthropic’s possible chip.

Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Young Hyun Jun described the broader market this way: “AI is driving unprecedented demand for tightly integrated semiconductor technologies spanning memory, logic and advanced packaging.” That industry statement is not a comment on Anthropic’s project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown?
- Whether Anthropic continued the project after the July 2026 reports.
- Whether Samsung was selected as a manufacturing partner or any agreement was signed.
- Whether the chip would use a 2nm process.
- What workload the chip would target, how it would fit into servers, and what its power requirements would be.
- Whether Anthropic has set a performance target—or whether 4,000 TOPS has any connection to the project.
There are no confirmed chip models or designs to compare. If specifications are later disclosed, useful comparisons will need to match process, workload, precision, power, memory and packaging, as well as availability and deployment timing.
