Claude Opus 5.5 arrived on September 22, followed by Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28. Anthropic said Haiku 5.5 would join the lineup “in the coming weeks,” but that announcement did not confirm a launch. Separately, Anthropic has filed a confidential draft registration statement for a proposed IPO; it has not announced a completed or scheduled offering.
Which Claude 5.5 models had launched?
Anthropic’s dated announcements and release notes identify Opus 5.5 as the first model in the family and Sonnet 5.5 as the second. The company described Haiku 5.5 as forthcoming, so the claim that Anthropic launched a third Claude 5.5 model is not supported by those sources as of October 7, 2026.
| Model | Status and date | Intended use, as described by Anthropic |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | Announced September 22, 2026; first in the family | Complex work requiring careful judgment, including coding and professional tasks |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Announced September 28, 2026; second in the family | Faster, lower-cost work such as everyday scoped tasks, bug fixes, and polished documents, slides, and spreadsheets |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | Forthcoming in the September 28 announcement; no launch confirmed there | High-volume and cost-sensitive applications |

How do Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 differ?
Opus 5.5: complex work
Anthropic positioned Opus 5.5 for work where careful judgment matters. The company said it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work, costs 40% less to run than Opus 5, and produces output more than 30% faster than Opus 5. Those are Anthropic’s comparisons, not independent benchmark results in the cited announcement. Reuters reported API prices of $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens on September 28, 2026.

Sonnet 5.5: everyday scoped work
Anthropic presented Sonnet 5.5 as a quicker, lower-cost option for well-defined tasks. The company reported that it runs more than 30% faster and costs up to 30% less for most work than Sonnet 5. Anthropic also reported a score of 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 for Sonnet 5.5, compared with 10.3% for Sonnet 5; it describes the benchmark as an agentic coding evaluation. These are company-reported figures, not independent testing. Reuters reported Sonnet 5.5 API prices of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens on September 28, 2026, and said the pricing was unchanged from its predecessor.

Is Anthropic’s IPO confirmed?
No. On June 1, 2026, Anthropic said it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 for a proposed IPO. A confidential draft submission is a step toward a possible public offering, not confirmation that the company has gone public or set a listing date.
Anthropic said a decision to go public would depend on SEC review, market conditions, and other factors. It also said the number of shares and offering price had not been set. The company summarized the conditional status this way: “This gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review.” The statement is from Anthropic’s June 1 announcement, not a quotation attributed to a named executive.

Anthropic is expanding its model lineup while preparing for a possible public offering, but the launch announcements do not establish that one caused the other. Reuters reported that enterprise customers account for about 80% of Anthropic’s business and named Salesforce, Databricks, Goldman Sachs, and Novo Nordisk among its customers. That customer-share figure is Reuters reporting, not a figure in the cited model announcements.
The practical takeaway is to separate the two developments: two Claude 5.5 models had been announced, with Haiku described as upcoming; Anthropic had submitted a confidential draft S-1, while any IPO remained conditional and unscheduled.
