Anthropic API credits are prepaid funds, not a discount on token prices. To estimate what you’ll actually pay, price each type of token at the selected model’s current rate, add any separately priced features, then subtract the resulting charge from your credit balance. Discounts such as Batch API pricing and lower cache-read rates change the cost of eligible usage; buying credits changes how much prepaid balance you have.

Are Anthropic API credits a discount?

No. Anthropic says API and Workbench usage is paid for with prepaid credits, which are applied to usage at current prices. A credit balance can cover charges, but it does not by itself reduce the rate charged for each token. A promotional credit or grant, if offered, would increase the available balance; it would not establish a lower token rate. The reviewed sources do not specify terms for any particular promotion. See Anthropic’s API payment and credit guidance.

That distinction matters when planning spend: calculate the cost of usage first, then compare that estimate with your balance. Check the current Anthropic pricing page before using exact dollar rates, because rates and model availability can change.

How do I calculate Anthropic token costs?

Estimate each billable category separately for the model and request type you expect to use. Do not blend input, output, cache writes, and cache reads into a single average unless you clearly state the assumptions behind it.

Estimated charge = (input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate + cache-write tokens × cache-write rate + cache-read tokens × cache-read rate) ÷ 1,000,000 + separately priced feature charges

Use the units and rates shown for the selected model on Anthropic’s pricing page. Apply any relevant multipliers, and include separately priced features where applicable. For Batch API requests, apply the documented discount only to eligible asynchronous batch usage. For long-context pricing, first check whether the request crosses the applicable input-token threshold.

To plan the balance after usage, use:

Ending credit balance = starting credit balance − estimated successful usage charges + additional credit purchases

This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed invoice. Actual token usage and the rates that apply when the requests run determine charges. Anthropic says failed requests are not charged; if the credit balance runs out, API and Workbench use stops until credits are available.

Which pricing options can lower usage costs?

Anthropic’s published pricing describes several mechanisms that affect what eligible usage costs. Their effect depends on the workflow, model, context length, and reuse pattern.

Batch API

Anthropic documents a 50% discount on input and output token rates for asynchronous Batch API processing. The discount is for eligible batch requests, not ordinary synchronous calls. Anthropic’s pricing page also says Batch API can be combined with prompt caching.

Prompt caching

Caching has both write and read costs. Anthropic’s pricing page lists 5-minute cache writes at 1.25× the base input price, 1-hour cache writes at 2×, and cache hits or refreshes at 0.1×. A cache write therefore costs more than ordinary input, while a cache read is cheaper; whether caching reduces total spend depends on how much context is reused and how often it is read. Estimate the write cost and expected reads rather than assuming every cached prompt is cheaper.

Long-context pricing

Long-context rates can apply across a request once its input exceeds the applicable threshold. In Anthropic’s cited Sonnet 4 1M-context example, requests above 200,000 input tokens use long-context pricing for all tokens in the request. The threshold includes input tokens in cache writes and cache reads, not output tokens. The pricing page says Batch API discounts apply to long-context rates and caching multipliers apply on top. Confirm current model eligibility, thresholds, and rates on the live pricing page before relying on this example.

Volume or enterprise pricing

Anthropic says volume discounts may be available for high-volume usage on a case-by-case basis and invites enterprise customers to discuss custom pricing. The published information does not establish a standard discount percentage or general eligibility rule, so do not include a negotiated reduction in an estimate unless you have account-specific terms.

When do prepaid credits expire, and how do you manage them?

Credits bought through the Console Billing page are available immediately. Anthropic’s Help Center says they expire one year after purchase, the expiration date cannot be extended, and purchases are non-refundable. Optional auto-reload can purchase additional credits when the balance drops below a configured threshold; you can also set the reload amount. Review these settings and the purchase terms before prepaying.

Anthropic’s Help Center states: “Credits expire one year from the purchase date, and this expiration date cannot be extended.”

A practical way to estimate your bill

  1. Choose the model and request mix. Record the expected input and output tokens for each kind of request, and use the current rates for that model.
  2. Separate cache activity. Estimate cache-write tokens by duration and cache-read tokens; apply the listed multipliers instead of treating all input tokens alike.
  3. Check context length. Determine whether total input—including cache writes and reads—crosses the model’s long-context threshold, and use the applicable rates if it does.
  4. Identify batch-eligible work. Apply the documented 50% reduction to input and output rates only for eligible asynchronous Batch API requests.
  5. Add other feature charges. Include any separately priced features that your requests use.
  6. Compare with prepaid funds. Subtract the estimated successful usage charges from the starting balance, then add planned credit purchases. Treat the result as a budget estimate, not a fixed invoice.
