The Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) was announced on August 1, 2023, as an industry collaboration to promote and standardize Universal Scene Description (USD). Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA were named as its founding members. AOUSD is a standards initiative—not a new consumer product—and its goal is to make it easier to exchange and work with 3D scene data across tools and industries.
What is the Alliance for OpenUSD?
AOUSD is an open, non-profit organization within the Joint Development Foundation. It provides a forum for members to coordinate the standardization, development, evolution, and growth of OpenUSD. Its work is organized through working groups and interest groups, alongside membership and governance structures. AOUSD’s website describes the organization and its current initiatives.
Who founded AOUSD?
The Joint Development Foundation announced the alliance on August 1, 2023. The five founding members named in the contemporary Linux Foundation account were:
- Pixar
- Adobe
- Apple
- Autodesk
- NVIDIA
These are the companies identified as founding members at launch; the alliance’s membership has since grown.

What is OpenUSD?
OpenUSD stands for Universal Scene Description. It is a technology for describing 3D scenes and their components. The alliance’s standardization effort is intended to help different applications and teams describe, compose, simulate, and exchange scene data using shared specifications.
OpenUSD has been used in varied 3D workflows. For example, NVIDIA described its Omniverse platform as OpenUSD-native in an August 2023 account of its ecosystem. That is an example of an implementation, not a promise that every OpenUSD tool, feature, or asset will work seamlessly with every other one; practical interoperability depends on how products implement and support the technology.

Why was the Alliance for OpenUSD formed?
3D projects often move between tools, platforms, and industries. Differences in how applications represent or handle scene data can make those handoffs difficult. AOUSD was formed to coordinate technical development and create common specifications, with the aim of improving interoperability for developers and content creators working on large-scale 3D projects.
That goal should be distinguished from a measured result: the 2023 announcement set out what the alliance intended to achieve, rather than proving that all 3D workflows had become interoperable.

How has AOUSD’s work progressed?
Cross-collaboration with the graphics community
On March 11, 2024, the Academy Software Foundation recorded that it and AOUSD had announced a liaison relationship to support cross-collaboration on OpenUSD development and interoperability. The ASWF USD working-group page records the announcement.
Core Specification 1.1 and the ISO process
In an update published July 21, 2026, AOUSD said it had begun the ISO certification process for Core Specification 1.1. Beginning the process is a milestone, but it does not mean ISO certification is complete. AOUSD also described a GitHub repository intended to let developers follow and propose specification changes. The alliance’s news page carries the update.

Membership and reported examples
The same July 2026 update named ByteDance, Huawei, Physicl, and Unity as new general members. It also reported examples involving geospatial data, preparing CAD data for robotics simulation, and experimental agent-guided USD workflows. These are examples cited by AOUSD, not evidence that every such workflow is broadly available or interoperable across products.
In that July 2026 announcement, Guy Martin, NVIDIA’s Director of Open Source & Standards and an AOUSD Steering Committee vice chair, said: “The rapid expansion of the Alliance for OpenUSD ecosystem demonstrates the growing industry demand for an open, interoperable 3D data standard.” The statement reflects the alliance’s later milestone announcement, not the original 2023 launch.
