Angular standalone components change where template dependencies are declared and how application-wide providers are configured; they do not replace Angular’s compiler or dependency injection. A standalone component lists the components, directives, pipes, and NgModules its template needs in its own imports. The application can start with bootstrapApplication, with shared providers configured at the application or route level. Existing NgModules can remain during an incremental migration.
What changes when Angular components are standalone?
The central change is where Angular finds a component’s template dependencies. In an NgModule-based design, a component’s template scope is assembled through its module’s declarations, imports, and exports. In a standalone design, the component declares its template dependencies directly in its own imports metadata.
That shifts the dependency graph from module-centered to component-centered. Instead of tracing a component to its declaring module and then following imports and exports, a maintainer can usually look at the component to see which template building blocks it uses. The list is also a boundary: a component’s template can use what it imports, rather than every item that happens to be available elsewhere in the application.
Angular’s documentation recommends standalone components for new code. That is a direction for new development, not a requirement to discard an existing NgModule architecture. Standalone and NgModule-based code can interoperate, so teams can adopt the model in stages.

How do standalone components change compilation?
Standalone components change the inputs Angular uses to determine a template’s compilation scope; they do not mean Angular has an entirely different compiler. The practical difference is that dependencies are resolved from the component’s explicit imports instead of being assembled through a broader NgModule declaration, import, and export graph.
NgModule template scope
In an NgModule design, a component belongs to a module through its declarations. The module’s imports make other modules’ exported template dependencies available to its declared components. To understand what a template can use, a developer may need to inspect the declaring module and the modules it imports.
Standalone template scope
A standalone component’s imports can list standalone components, directives, pipes, and existing NgModules. This puts the template’s dependencies alongside the component that uses them. For example:
@Component({
selector: 'app-profile',
imports: [ProfilePhoto, NgIf],
template: `
<profile-photo />
<p *ngIf="loaded">Ready</p>
`,
})
export class Profile {}
Here, ProfilePhoto and NgIf are template dependencies. If the template uses a directive, pipe, or child component that is missing from imports, Angular may report a template compilation error. The remedy is to add the missing dependency in the component’s imports, or to check that it is available through an imported NgModule.

Does standalone Angular compile faster?
A more local dependency list can make template relationships easier to inspect, but that is not proof of faster compilation. Angular’s official material discussed here does not provide a quantitative standalone-versus-NgModule compilation benchmark, so a universal speed or percentage improvement should not be assumed.
How do standalone components affect dependency injection?
Standalone components do not remove Angular dependency injection or its injector hierarchy. The main architectural shift is that application and route configuration commonly use EnvironmentInjector providers, while a component’s providers and viewProviders still configure local ElementInjector scope.
EnvironmentInjector: application and route configuration
With standalone bootstrapping, Angular creates the root EnvironmentInjector from the configuration passed to bootstrapApplication. It is the natural location for application-wide framework configuration and shared services. Route-level providers can establish configuration at a route boundary. Service metadata such as @Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' }) is another way to register a broadly available service; Angular’s DI guidance describes this pattern as supporting tree-shaking of unused services.

});
In this example, the provider functions configure the application environment. They do not add directives or pipes to a component template.

ElementInjector: component-local providers
A component’s providers or viewProviders configure its ElementInjector. Use these when a component or its subtree needs a locally scoped service instance rather than a service configured for the whole application. This component-level mechanism remains part of standalone Angular; standalone changes do not turn every provider into a root provider.
ModuleInjector: compatibility with NgModules
The ModuleInjector remains relevant to NgModule-based applications and participates in compatibility with existing module providers. Standalone applications can use existing NgModules rather than requiring every library or feature to be rewritten before an application can adopt standalone bootstrapping.
What is the difference between a template import and a provider?
A template import makes a component, directive, pipe, or NgModule available to a component’s template. A provider registers or configures a value that Angular’s injector can resolve. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.
| Need | Where it belongs | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Application-wide service | Service metadata such as @Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' }), or application providers |
Registers the service for application-level injection; service metadata can support tree-shaking. |
| Application-wide framework configuration | bootstrapApplication(..., { providers: [...] }) or an ApplicationConfig |
Places root configuration at the application boundary. |
| Route-specific configuration | Route providers or route-level importProvidersFrom |
Scopes configuration to a route EnvironmentInjector boundary. |
| Component-local service instance | Component providers or viewProviders |
Configures an ElementInjector for a component’s local scope. |
| Providers from an existing NgModule | importProvidersFrom(LegacyModule) in application or route providers |
Bridges providers collected from existing NgModules into an EnvironmentInjector. |
importProvidersFrom is for an application injector or another EnvironmentInjector, such as a route injector. Do not put it in a component’s providers array; Angular’s API reference does not designate it for component providers.

How does standalone compare with an NgModule-based design?
The biggest difference is the location of the configuration, not the existence of templates, providers, or dependency injection. The following comparison focuses on the architectural responsibilities that move or remain.
| Area | Standalone components | NgModule-based design |
|---|---|---|
| Template dependencies | Listed in each component’s imports. |
Made available through module declarations, imports, and exports. |
| Root startup | bootstrapApplication with a standalone root component. |
bootstrapModule with an NgModule bootstrap configuration. |
| Application providers | Commonly configured through ApplicationConfig, provider functions, and the EnvironmentInjector. |
Module providers and the ModuleInjector remain central to the design. |
| Local provider scope | Component providers and viewProviders configure ElementInjectors. |
The same component-level provider mechanism exists, alongside module providers. |
| Legacy interoperability | Can import existing NgModules for template dependencies and bridge their providers. | Remains the native organizational model for existing module-based applications and libraries. |
| Migration | Can be adopted incrementally while modules with remaining responsibilities stay in place. | Can continue without migration; Angular’s current guidance favors standalone for new code. |
How do I migrate an Angular app from NgModule to standalone?
Angular documents a three-stage migration: convert declarations to standalone, remove NgModules that are no longer needed, and then switch application startup to bootstrapApplication. Treat these as ordered stages, not as a single rewrite; verify the app builds and runs between stages.
- Convert components, directives, and pipes to standalone. Use the standalone migration schematic where appropriate. It adds template dependencies to component imports, but manual fixes may still be necessary. Build and run the app before proceeding.
- Remove unnecessary NgModules. First check whether a module still owns providers, bootstrap behavior, or configuration. A module may still be needed even after its declarations have become standalone, particularly when it contains provider patterns such as
ModuleWithProviders. - Switch the root startup configuration. Move from
bootstrapModuletobootstrapApplicationwith a standalone root component. Put application-wide providers in the bootstrap configuration or anApplicationConfig, and preserve required legacy providers through an appropriate EnvironmentInjector bridge.
Work in small slices, especially in applications with substantial module-level configuration. The migration guidance identifies compilation errors, source files outside the relevant TypeScript configuration, and metadata that cannot be statically analyzed as possible obstacles. If a migration step cannot infer a dependency or configuration safely, inspect the affected code and make the change manually rather than removing a module on assumption alone.

What performance benefits can you reasonably expect?
Standalone is an architectural model, not a guaranteed performance upgrade. Angular’s documentation supports two narrower points: service registration through metadata such as providedIn can enable tree-shaking of unused services, and lazy-loaded routes can split production bundles so less JavaScript is loaded at initial page load.

Neither point establishes a universal improvement caused solely by converting components from NgModules to standalone. No universal compilation-time, runtime-speed, or bundle-size percentage follows from the dependency model alone. Treat claims of a fixed gain as requiring a separately published benchmark that names its Angular version, application, build conditions, and measurement method.
Which standalone pitfalls should I check first?
Most mistakes come from putting a dependency in the wrong place or removing a module before understanding what it still configures. Check these issues when a template fails or a migration produces unexpected provider behavior.
- A template dependency is missing. Add the directive, pipe, or component to the standalone component’s
imports, or import the NgModule that exports it. - A template import is mistaken for a service provider. Put template building blocks in component imports and injectable services or framework configuration in the relevant injector’s providers.
importProvidersFromis placed in component providers. Move it to application providers or a route-level EnvironmentInjector configuration.- An NgModule is removed too early. Check for providers, bootstrap configuration, and other responsibilities before deleting it.
- A cleaner graph is treated as a performance guarantee. Local imports improve visibility, but they do not establish a compilation benchmark or a universal runtime gain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a standalone Angular app still use a library built around NgModules?
Yes. A standalone component can import an existing NgModule when it needs that module’s exported template dependencies. If the library also supplies providers, those can be bridged into an application or route EnvironmentInjector with importProvidersFrom.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDoes importing a directive into a standalone component provide its services?
No. The component’s imports make template declarations available; service registration belongs to Angular’s injector configuration. If a directive needs a service, that service must still be provided through an appropriate injector or service metadata.
Can I migrate only one feature to standalone?
Yes. Standalone components and NgModules can coexist, so a migration can proceed in slices rather than requiring a complete rewrite. Keep a module where it still has configuration or provider responsibilities.
Will standalone components automatically reduce my production bundle?
Not automatically. Bundle splitting depends on choices such as lazy-loaded routes, and tree-shaking depends on how services and other code are registered and used; conversion alone does not guarantee a particular bundle-size change.
