An Android version update moves a tablet to a newer Android release; a security update delivers security patches and related fixes without necessarily changing the Android version number. Redmi tablet owners should check both fields and judge Xiaomi’s update promise against the exact model, regional variant and software branch—not the Redmi name alone.
What is the difference between an Android version update and a security update?

Xiaomi’s tablet support instructions treat Android version and Android security update as separate information. A tablet can therefore keep the same Android version while receiving a newer security patch, or change Android version as part of a major upgrade. Neither field alone tells you the whole support story.
How many updates does each Redmi tablet get?
Xiaomi’s published commitments differ by model. These are the stated promises for two India-market tablets; they should not be assumed to apply to other Redmi tablets or regions.

The original Redmi Pad’s India specifications list MIUI 13 coupled with Android 12 as its out-of-box software. That is a starting version, not a statement of the tablet’s current software or rollout status. [Xiaomi India Redmi Pad specifications]

Xiaomi’s broader security-support page says its smartphone updates typically continue for at least two years after first shipment, with three years or longer for some models depending on actual conditions. It also says Xiaomi may issue necessary fixes for very serious vulnerabilities for devices on its end-of-life list. - Open Settings → Face data & screen lock → Privacy → Security update.
- Tap Check for update.
- Review the Android version, Android security update and last successful check displayed on the screen.
Xiaomi advises ensuring the tablet has sufficient storage before downloading and installing an update. Menu labels can differ by model or software build. How to interpret a Redmi tablet’s support promise
- Confirm the full model name. Similar names can refer to products with different update commitments, as the original Redmi Pad and Redmi Pad SE 4G examples show.
- Confirm the region and software branch. A promise published for India should not be assumed to cover another regional variant.
- Separate upgrade count from security duration. “Two Android updates” counts major version changes; “three years of security updates” describes a maintenance period. They are different measures.
- Check when the clock starts. Xiaomi’s model FAQs state durations, but the reviewed claims do not establish a first-shipment date or a calendar end date. Do not calculate one without confirming the applicable start point and terms.
- Check the tablet itself for current availability. Xiaomi’s published commitments do not establish whether a specific device in a specific region has the latest rollout today. The Settings screen is the practical place to check its installed information and update availability.
What an update count does—and does not—tell you
A promise of two Android version updates does not tell you the date either upgrade will arrive, and a security-maintenance duration does not mean patches arrive on a fixed monthly schedule unless Xiaomi says so for that device. The reviewed model pages provide update counts and durations but do not state publication years for those claims. Avoid turning those figures into a calendar deadline or an assertion that your tablet is currently supported or overdue without checking the model-specific terms and device status.
