An Android phone can serve as a small home server with Termux, especially if you already own a spare handset and want to run a lightweight command-line service. A Raspberry Pi is the more conventional dedicated host, with documented model choices and more predictable physical connectivity. Neither is proven to use less electricity in every setup: compare the exact devices running the same service and measure their power at the wall.
Which should you choose?
Start with the service you want to run, then consider whether the host must stay available unattended and what network or storage it needs.
- Choose an Android phone with Termux if you have a spare handset, the service works in Termux, and you can verify it remains available under your phone’s power-management behavior.
- Choose a Raspberry Pi if you want a separate, documented host and value model-dependent hardware options such as Ethernet or USB ports.
- If electricity use is the deciding factor, measure both. The available published Pi figures are not a like-for-like comparison with an Android phone.
What can an Android phone run?
Termux describes itself as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment. That gives you a way to run some command-line tools and services without replacing Android, but it does not guarantee that every Linux server package, service manager, permission, or peripheral will work. Check compatibility for the particular service you plan to host. Termux documentation
Check whether the service stays online
Android places limits on background execution, and the effect depends on Android version, handset manufacturer, power settings, and how the service is built. A process that works while the screen is on may not remain available after the phone sleeps or reboots. Android’s developer guidance explains background execution limits, but the relevant test is on the actual handset and software version you plan to use. Android background execution limits

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Confirm the service starts after a reboot if it needs to run continuously.
- Test access from another device after the phone’s screen has been off for an extended period.
- Check how the handset behaves with its battery and power-management settings, and whether Android stops or restricts the service.
These checks establish whether your phone works for your use case; Termux’s general documentation does not establish 24/7 reliability for a particular handset.
What does a Raspberry Pi offer?
A Raspberry Pi is a separate computing board with official documentation covering hardware, power, boot, and peripherals. Available connectivity depends on the model. Some models include Ethernet; Raspberry Pi setup guidance describes using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter for models without it. Raspberry Pi setup documentation

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Plan the whole build, not only the board. USB storage, network adapters, HATs, and other attached devices can increase power requirements; some peripherals may need an externally powered hub. Use a power supply appropriate for the selected model and account for every attached device. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation
What do the published Raspberry Pi power figures mean?
Raspberry Pi’s current hardware documentation lists typical bare-board active current consumption by model. These are current figures for the board, not direct wall-power measurements and not a comparison with a phone.

| Raspberry Pi model | Typical bare-board active current |
|---|---|
| Zero | 100 mA |
| Zero W | 150 mA |
| Zero 2 W | 350 mA |
| 3 Model B | 400 mA |
| 4 Model B | 600 mA |
| 5 | 800 mA |
The same documentation includes older average-idle measurements: 0.10 A for Pi Zero, 0.30 A for Pi 3 Model B, and 0.6 A for Pi 4 Model B. Those figures came from older Raspberry Pi OS setups (2016 for the Zero and 3B; June 2019 for the 4B), with monitor and input peripherals connected. Raspberry Pi calls the workload measurements approximate and says they do not include additional USB devices. They should not be treated as a current, universal home-server benchmark. How to compare electricity use fairly
No like-for-like measurement of a specified Android phone and Raspberry Pi running the same server workload is established here. Battery percentage, a phone’s charger rating, and a Pi’s bare-board current are not comparable readings of the complete systems’ electricity use.

- Choose the exact phone and Pi model, and install the same intended service on each.
- Match the network connection and include the storage, adapters, and other peripherals each system needs.
- Measure each complete system’s electricity use at the wall with a suitable meter, over the same duration.
- Record the operating system versions, attached devices, measurement duration, and workload. Include both idle periods and the active use that matters for your service.
This comparison answers the practical question for your equipment and workload. A phone that appears efficient while idle may behave differently under load or with its screen and wireless radios active; a Pi’s consumption also changes with its model and peripherals.

Use a phone for an experiment or small service
A spare Android phone can be a sensible first host when avoiding a new board matters and the service is available in Termux. Favor this route when Wi-Fi is sufficient, the required storage and permissions are workable, and occasional device-specific setup is acceptable. Test uptime rather than assuming that a phone designed for everyday use will behave like a dedicated server.

- 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
Use a Pi for a separate, configurable host
A Pi is a stronger fit when you want the server to be independent of your personal phone or need model-specific ports and accessories. Choose a model around the workload and connectivity: for example, the documentation lists USB 3.0 ports and wired Ethernet on Pi 4 Model B, while smaller boards differ in their available I/O. Add only the storage and adapters your setup requires, and include their power needs in your plan.
Do not pick a board from the current figures alone
The documented bare-board current values describe different Pi models, not equivalent performance under your service. The older idle measurements use different dates and setups. Use them as model-specific context, then measure the complete system if electricity cost is central to the decision.
