Android’s mobile driver’s license (mDL) in Google Wallet is a government-verified digital version of an eligible U.S. driver’s license or state ID. It can make some in-person and online identity checks more private and convenient—but it is not accepted everywhere and does not replace your physical card. Whether you can use it depends on your state or territory, Android device, and the agency or business checking your ID.
What an Android mobile driver’s license is
A mobile driver’s license is a digital identity credential issued or approved by a government agency. In Google Wallet, an approved credential is encrypted and stored on the Android device rather than in the user’s Google Account. Google says the holder controls when to present it and can review the information a verifier requests before sharing.
The credential can be used in supported in-person presentations and, where an app or website supports the relevant online flow, for digital identity checks. Wallet availability alone does not mean that every airport, police officer, retailer, website, or other verifier will accept it.
Who can add an ID to Google Wallet
Google’s U.S. support page lists Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and Puerto Rico. The list can change, so check Google Wallet’s current supported ID locations and requirements before trying to enroll.

Google lists these requirements:
- An Android device running Android 9 or later.
- Bluetooth and Nearby devices enabled.
- A screen lock, which Google requires for added security.
- An eligible license or ID from a participating state or territory.
For tap-based presentations, NFC can be useful. Google also documents QR-code initiation, so NFC is not required for every supported in-person exchange.
How to add your license or state ID
- Open Google Wallet and select Add to Wallet, then ID card.
- Follow the prompts to photograph the front and back of your license or ID.
- Record the requested short video and submit the enrollment for review. With your consent, Google sends the video image and ID information to the issuing agency.
- Wait for the issuing agency to review the application. If it approves the request, the encrypted credential is saved on your device.
Enrollment is not simply a scan that instantly creates a usable ID: the issuing agency reviews the submission. For details about enrollment information and handling, see Google Wallet’s privacy information for IDs.

How presenting the ID works
In person
In an implementation based on ISO 18013-5, a presentation can begin with an NFC tap or QR-code scan, with data transferred over Bluetooth Low Energy. The phone displays the requested information for the holder to review, and the holder authenticates on the device before sharing. The verifier must support the credential and presentation method; the standard does not compel any reader or organization to accept it.
This review step can let you share relevant requested fields instead of automatically showing every detail printed on a physical card. It is a capability of supported presentations, not a promise that every transaction will request only a minimal set of information.

Online
Online checks are a separate flow. Google describes participating apps and websites requesting proof—such as age, identity, or driving privileges—through the W3C Digital Credentials API from Google Wallet or another compliant wallet. This does not mean that all websites accept Wallet IDs. See Google’s overview of online digital credentials for the documented use cases.
What the standard guarantees—and what it does not
ISO/IEC 18013-5:2021, published in September 2021, specifies interfaces among a mobile driver’s license, a reader, and issuing-authority infrastructure. It supports machine retrieval of mDL data and methods to authenticate the data’s origin and integrity. The ISO catalog says this edition is expected to be replaced by a draft revision in the coming months; that is a statement of the catalog’s current revision status, not a guarantee about when a new edition will be published.

The standard does not specify how holder consent must be obtained or how mDL data and private keys must be stored. Those protections should be attributed to a particular wallet or issuer implementation. Google says its Wallet ID is encrypted and stored on the device, and that the user reviews and controls sharing; those are Google’s product claims, not requirements established by ISO alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Potential benefits, with practical limits
- More deliberate disclosure: In supported presentations, you can review requested fields before sharing, which may avoid exposing unrelated details when the verifier asks for less than the full card contains.
- Credential-data checks: Google says ID data is backed by a cryptographic signature, and ISO describes origin and integrity authentication. These mechanisms can help a verifier check credential data; they do not eliminate fraud or guarantee that every reader performs the same checks.
- Phone-based in-person presentation: NFC or QR initiation offers an alternative to handing over a physical card in a compatible setup. Acceptance still depends on the verifier.
- Some online identity checks: Digital credentials can support age, identity, or driving-privilege requests in participating apps and websites, but support is not universal.
Android’s platform documentation has also described an Identity Credential HAL Direct Access capability that could allow an NFC presentation when a battery is too low to boot the phone. That 2020 platform background is not a promise that every current handset or every Google Wallet ID supports low-battery presentation. See the Android Developers post from November 2020.

When to keep carrying the physical card
Google explicitly says, “A digital ID in Google Wallet is not a replacement for your physical ID.” Keep the physical card available as needed, particularly when traveling, driving, visiting a location, or completing a transaction where acceptance has not been confirmed. Before relying on an mDL, check the current instructions from the relevant agency, venue, or verifier. A supported state and a working Wallet credential do not by themselves establish acceptance at an airport checkpoint, in a roadside interaction, or at an age-restricted purchase.
Google Wallet ID versus a physical card or state app
There is no basis for calling one format categorically safer or more widely accepted across all situations. Compare the options for the specific place and transaction where you plan to use them:
Quick Recap
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Issuer and geographic availability | Google Wallet support depends on participation by the state or territory that issued the ID. State-specific apps have their own issuer and geographic limits. |
| Acceptance by the intended verifier | A venue, agency, or website chooses whether and how to accept a digital credential. Confirm its current rules rather than assuming acceptance from availability in Wallet. |
| Information shared | Google describes holder review of requested fields in supported presentations. Check how the particular app or credential handles disclosure. |
| Storage and authentication | Google says its credential is encrypted on the device and requires device authentication for an in-person presentation. Do not treat ISO alone as establishing a wallet’s storage controls. |
| Presentation methods | Supported in-person flows may use NFC or QR initiation and Bluetooth Low Energy transfer; online flows require a participating app or website. |
| Backup ID | Google says the Wallet ID does not replace the physical ID. Check what physical backup the relevant verifier requires. |
