Choose an Android handheld around the games you want to play, not just its processor. Check software and graphics support, screen fit, controls, battery, storage, and the full cost of the device and accessories. A powerful chip on a spec sheet does not guarantee that demanding games or emulators will run well.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down the Android games and emulated systems you expect to use most. That list determines what performance you need and helps prevent paying for power you will not use—or buying a device that struggles with your main games.
For emulation, consider software and graphics-driver support as well as the chipset. Compatibility and performance vary by game and emulator; a capable processor alone is no guarantee. Android Authority notes that demanding systems can be hit-or-miss even on handhelds with capable chips. Its Android handheld guide is dated September 28, 2025, so treat its device recommendations as editorial guidance rather than a current universal ranking.
Match the screen to your library and portability needs
Compare panel type, size, resolution, and aspect ratio together. A bigger, sharper screen can make games easier to see, but it can also mean a larger handheld to carry. Aspect ratio affects how much of the display a game uses: Android Authority describes 4:3 as a fit for many retro home-console games, 16:9 for PSP- and Switch-style content, and 3:2 as a strong match for GBA games, with modest letterboxing elsewhere.

Check refresh rate if it is documented and relevant to the games you play. Do not assume that resolution or panel type alone tells you how a game will look; the game’s format and the handheld’s aspect ratio matter too.
Check controls and comfort in the games you play
Look at the D-pad, analog-stick placement, shoulder buttons and triggers, face-button layout, and the shape and weight of the device. A layout that works for one type of game may feel awkward for another, and a specification list cannot establish whether a handheld will feel comfortable in a long session.
If you are considering a separate grip, account for its price and whether it fits with the case you want to use. A grip is useful only if it improves the selected device for you; it is not a substitute for checking the handheld’s own ergonomics.

Separate battery capacity from real-world runtime
Compare battery capacity and charging details, but treat runtime figures as estimates unless they come from a clearly described independent test. Actual play time depends on use, including the games and display settings.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calculate the total purchase cost and check the seller
Compare the current device price alongside shipping, taxes, and any card, grip, case, or charger you may need. Before ordering, check stock, seller identity, return terms, and warranty coverage for your region. These details can change between sellers and over time, so verify them on the specific listing rather than relying on an old price or recommendation.
The RG556 is a useful example of why the whole specification matters: ANBERNIC lists Android 13, a 5.48-inch AMOLED touchscreen at 1080×1920, a Unisoc T820 processor, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB UFS 2.2 storage, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, Hall joystick and trigger, fan and heat-pipe cooling, USB-C DisplayPort output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those manufacturer-listed specifications do not by themselves establish how well a particular game or emulator performs. The product page may show a price, but it should be checked at purchase time.

Use a shortlist, not a one-number ranking
Compare candidates on the same criteria so that a strength in one area does not obscure a drawback in another. Nick Fernandez of Android Authority puts the balance succinctly: “The perfect handheld has the right mix of build quality, power, and ergonomics.”
- Games and performance: Does the device support the games and systems you care about, including through appropriate software and graphics drivers?
- Screen: Do the panel, size, resolution, and aspect ratio suit your library and portability needs?
- Controls and comfort: Is the layout appropriate for your games, and does the form factor work for the way you play?
- Battery and charging: Are the specifications and charging method acceptable, and are runtime claims clearly attributed?
- Storage: Is built-in capacity enough, or have you confirmed compatible expansion?
- Total cost and purchase confidence: Have you checked the current delivered price, seller, stock, returns, and warranty?
