You can improve Android battery life without disabling notifications, location, Bluetooth, or every app that runs in the background. Start by checking which apps and activities use the most power, then make low-disruption changes: keep adaptive battery controls on, use adaptive brightness and a suitable screen timeout, and limit only apps whose background activity is unnecessary. Menu names differ by device; the Pixel and Galaxy paths below are examples, not universal Android instructions.
Why is my Android battery draining so fast?
The first step is to find out whether the battery is draining during screen use or while the phone is idle. A navigation session, video stream, hotspot, or long period with the screen on can explain a short day; an app that stays active in the background or an aging battery may point to a different problem. Don’t assume the app at the top of a usage list is faulty: a frequently used app may simply be doing what you asked it to do.
Check the phone’s built-in battery report before changing settings. On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. Review the apps listed and, where available, inspect an app’s background battery setting. On a Galaxy, open Settings > Battery > View details to see app usage and compare screen-on with screen-off time. Names and locations can vary with the model, software version, and carrier.
Those details help you choose the right remedy:
- High use while the screen is on: Look at display brightness, screen-on time, and power-intensive activities such as navigation or streaming.
- Unexpected use while the phone is idle: Check the app list for an app with disproportionate background activity. Restrict it only if it does not need to work while closed.
- Short runtime even after sensible settings changes: Consider whether the battery has lost capacity. Settings cannot restore an aged battery.
Pixel 6 and later phones also have a device-specific diagnostic: Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. This is a Pixel feature, not a general Android tool. Google’s Android battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy support steps provide additional model-specific direction.

Which changes save power without disabling useful features?
Start with settings that reduce wasted screen time or let Android manage infrequently used apps. These are less disruptive than turning off connections or stopping all background activity.
1. Keep adaptive battery and app optimization enabled
On supported Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization help limit unnecessary power use while preserving normal use of apps. Google says these controls are enabled by default and recommends leaving them on. To find Adaptive Battery, open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery. For an individual app, open Settings > Apps > App battery usage and review its available setting. The exact labels may differ by Android version.
Optimization is not a guarantee that every app will behave identically: restricting background work can reduce performance or delay notifications. If an app needs timely alerts or must stay active while closed, check its behavior after changing its setting and restore less restrictive use if necessary. The goal is to address unnecessary activity, not to make essential apps unreliable.

Android Help notes that some general battery-saving steps require Android 13 or later, so an older phone may not show the same options.
2. Make the screen turn on only as brightly and as long as you need
Display settings are a practical first adjustment because they can reduce needless screen-on power without sacrificing visibility altogether. Turn on Adaptive brightness so brightness can respond to your surroundings, then choose a screen timeout that fits how you use the phone. A shorter timeout helps when you often set the phone down with the display still on; choose a longer one if you regularly need the screen to remain visible while reading or following instructions.
On a Galaxy, the brightness and screen-timeout controls are generally under Settings > Display. Pixel labels and locations can vary by version. Rather than dimming the display until it is uncomfortable, use automatic adjustment and reduce the time it stays on when idle. Samsung and Google both recommend these kinds of display adjustments in their battery guidance.

Galaxy phones provide background usage controls for apps that do not need to remain active. Open Settings > Battery > Background usage limits. Samsung’s options include sleeping apps and deep sleeping apps. Sleeping is intended for apps used infrequently; deep sleeping apps do not run in the background until you open them.
That makes these controls useful for an app you rarely open but not automatically right for every app. A messaging app may need background access for dependable alerts; an alarm, work app, or other time-sensitive tool may also need to run when it is not on screen. If a Galaxy app must remain active, Samsung provides a Never auto sleeping apps list. Keeping an app off sleep lists can mean more background use, so reserve exceptions for apps that actually need them.
Samsung’s background usage limits guidance describes these categories. Don’t apply a blanket rule that forces all apps to sleep: it can trade battery savings for delayed notifications or missed background activity.
4. Use Battery Saver when the trade-off is acceptable
Battery Saver is best treated as a situational option for when charge is low, not as the main way to improve everyday battery life. Pixel Battery Saver limits background refresh and may delay notifications; Extreme Battery Saver pauses most apps. Samsung also warns that Power saving can delay background app updates and notifications.

Before turning it on, consider what you need the phone to do until you can charge it. If you can tolerate less background activity, Battery Saver may help conserve the remaining charge. If you depend on prompt messages, work alerts, or other apps updating in the background, a broad power-saving mode may cause problems. Google’s Pixel Battery Saver documentation describes the Pixel modes and their effects.

Should I turn off Bluetooth, location, or mobile data?
Not as a blanket battery-saving rule. Turning off a connection can interfere with a feature you actually use, so first check usage and make a change only when it fits your situation. Google suggests using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when appropriate, but that is a conditional option—not a reason to disable a connection you need.
Location and Bluetooth can support navigation, connected accessories, and other useful features. If an app is using a feature in the background unexpectedly, review that app’s activity and permissions rather than disabling the feature for the whole phone. Similarly, hotspot use, long navigation sessions, and streaming can consume substantial power. If one of those is active, higher drain may reflect the workload rather than a fault.
On Galaxy models, Samsung’s Light performance profile is another optional trade-off: it favors battery life over processing speed. It is not a free performance improvement, and it may not be appropriate for every workload. Samsung also documents a Wi-Fi power-saving option on some devices, but it is not universal; Samsung says the option is unavailable on Galaxy S25 and devices running One UI 7.0 or later. Do not follow instructions for that setting unless your specific model and software actually offer it.

What should I do if the phone gets hot or started draining after an update?
Keep the phone cool and check whether the drain began during an unusually demanding activity. Heat can increase battery drain and harm the battery, so avoid leaving a phone in a hot environment or continuing a workload that is making it excessively warm. Streaming, hotspot use, and extended navigation are examples of activities that can use more power than light, idle use.
Check for system and app updates if the drain is persistent. A Pixel may temporarily use more power after setup, a reset, or an update while optimization activity takes place; allow some time to see whether the behavior settles before disabling a long list of features. If the problem continues, return to Battery usage and look for a repeatable pattern rather than guessing which service to turn off.
Does a battery limit give me more hours on today’s charge?
No. A charge limit or adaptive charging feature is about preserving long-term battery condition, not increasing the amount of energy available for the current day. If you need the longest runtime before your next charge, a cap that stops charging below full can leave you with less usable charge today.

Pixel Adaptive Charging and Samsung Adaptive Battery protection address how the phone charges over time. Consider a charge limit if you routinely finish the day with charge left and want to prioritize long-term battery health. If you need more runtime today, focus on consumption or charge fully when appropriate. Google’s Pixel charging and battery guidance explains its device-specific charging features; availability and behavior differ across phones.
When is a battery replacement better than more settings changes?
If the phone’s runtime has noticeably worsened over time, settings may not be the real issue. Battery-health diagnostics and service support can help distinguish an aging battery from an app or usage pattern.
Google says Battery health information is available on Pixel 8a and later. If a supported health reading is marked Reduced, Google recommends battery replacement. Samsung recommends a service-center check when a Galaxy shuts down unexpectedly or its runtime has noticeably diminished; Samsung Members also offers diagnostics. These checks and labels are manufacturer- and model-specific, so do not expect every Android phone to show the same health screen.
For Pixel phones in the United States, Google points to genuine, model-specific parts through iFixit. Self-repair is intended for people with relevant technical experience; professional repair options are also available in the United States, depending on the device and warranty. Repair availability varies by location and model. Do not assume that a generic battery or repair kit fits a particular phone. Google’s Pixel battery health guidance covers eligibility and the Reduced status.

A portable phone battery pack can add power when you are away from an outlet, letting you keep useful features available for longer. It does not reduce background drain, repair an aging internal battery, or restore lost battery capacity. Check compatibility with your phone before choosing a pack, especially if you want wireless charging; a particular wireless pack is not suitable for every Android device.

How should I choose the next step?
Match the remedy to the symptom instead of disabling useful features indiscriminately:
| What you notice | Best next step | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Battery falls quickly during screen use | Review screen-on time, use adaptive brightness, and choose a suitable timeout. | Turning off notifications or connections without identifying a cause. |
| Battery falls while the phone sits idle | Check app-level battery use and restrict only apps that do not need background activity. | Putting messaging, alarm, or work-critical apps into deep sleep by default. |
| Drain follows navigation, streaming, or hotspot use | Recognize the workload as a likely contributor; use Battery Saver if its restrictions are acceptable. | Assuming one setting will make a demanding session use no extra power. |
| Runtime has declined over a long period | Check the manufacturer’s supported battery-health tools and service options. | Expecting settings or a power bank to restore internal-battery capacity. |
| The phone charges slowly or intermittently | Inspect the cable and adapter and verify compatibility; seek service if the issue persists. | Buying an unspecified adapter based on another phone’s requirements. |
These steps target different outcomes. Settings can reduce power consumed per charge; repair addresses a worn internal battery; an external pack supplies additional power. No manufacturer guidance cited here establishes a universal percentage or number of hours that these settings will save, because the result depends on the phone, its condition, signal and usage patterns, and which settings change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Adaptive Battery delay notifications on Android?
It can affect background activity, and Google notes that optimization may delay notifications for some apps. If an alert is important, check that app’s battery setting and confirm that its notifications arrive when expected before keeping a restrictive setting.
Can I use my phone while it is charging if it gets warm?
Warmth can contribute to battery drain and harm the battery, so take persistent or unusual heat seriously rather than treating it as a normal battery-saving issue. Stop a demanding activity and move the phone away from a hot environment; if the problem continues, use the device maker’s support or service options.
Does Android 13 have different battery-saving settings?
Some general steps in Android Help require Android 13 or later, and individual manufacturers can add or move controls. If a menu path in this guide is missing, check the help page for your phone model and software version rather than assuming the feature is available on every Android device.
Will a new charger fix Android battery drain overnight?
Usually not if the phone is losing charge while unplugged; a charger addresses how the phone receives power, not what consumes it after charging. Check battery usage first, and investigate a cable or adapter only if charging itself is slow or unreliable.
